Subject: Hey Rockers! played an instrument? were you in a garage band?...any stories?

Written By: hot_wax on 11/28/04 at 11:44 pm

Drumming was my passion growing up, pots and pans and anything else that I could hit with wooden spoons were my drums when I was about 5 years old. Our downstairs neighbors used to pound on their ceilings with a broom handle for me to stop the racket but I only picked up their beat and went with it!

I got serious in the forth grade and took lessons was in school bands until high school. But we always managed to form our own garage bands and did the talent contests (that the schools nowadays don't do anymore), and for local CYO dances and parties of different occasions. They were the best times of my life then, but our last band the "Banlons" rubbed elbows with real deal when we played in a 24 hour "Twist-a -Fon" Charity gig sponsored by WABC radio. All of their Disc Jockeys took part M C'ing the affair. "Candy the Twister Girl" who wore her red stringy dress and was on a few of the those "Beach Party" movies won a twist contest to our version of "Let's Twist Again". We were only teenage kids and we followed the the group who sang "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and the Del Vikings followed us...we were scared s--t but we held our own and did our thing and got off the stage quickly.

They were good time and great memories and that was my claim to 15 minutes to fame. Do you have story or two you can share? I'd be happy to read them.

I played guitar and was in a couple of groups. The first one was in  1966-68 and was called
'the Hydraulic Banana'. We were between 13 and 15. We never recorded anything and never really played anywhere but a few parties. the other group was called 'friction', from 1971-72. We played parties, graduations and at a lake teen club. We never recorded either. :\'(

Friction.
Sounds like a good name for a band. Much better than "Hydraulic Banana".  ::)

Micah, I always wanted to play the guitar, you guys where the heart of the band gave it's character and got all the attention. We were in the sixth grade when we formed our first 4 piece group and entered a talent contest in our school and played " A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation", won 1st prize with that "Rocker" song...would you believe? it was close though, some girl in the eight grade sang "Sugar Time" and had a great voice but our guitar player had all the girls screaming loud for us and we won by popular vote!

Do you still have your guitar or do you play the "Air Guitar" now when you here your songs? if so, go get another one and brush up on the cords it's never to late, me, along with me going to get a new set of Slingerlands, I'm going to learn to play the piano before I die!

Good talking to you, keep in touch on your guitar venture.

bj26, Yeah if we could turn back time with and apply that statment we'd all have billions in the bank and buildings next door to Trump Towers...maybe in our next life.

I like and respect your determination, if not to turn back time,  but to recapture those good time days and try just one more time to make it big at what we love best.

I'm in NJ and if I can help you in anyway I will. Maybe others in the colony who read this topic and this reply and your request, knows people in Lexington KY who can help you get in touch with other musicians with that same dream and get that band together and make it work this time from what you know now.

Me, I only glad  my topic had a hand in getting you interested again in your passion and dreams...just remember me when you make it to the big times and leave a couple of concert tickets at the door for me!

I hope the best you. Keep in touch with me on your progress...that would be cool!
