Subject: The REAL King of Rock N' Roll: Elvis or Jerry Lee?
Written By: ElDuderino on 10/10/04 at 5:35 pm
So, who is it?
I vote for Jerry Lee, even though he did marry his second cousin.
Plus, Louisiana is my second home and a friend of mine is from Jerry Lee's home town, so I might be a little biased. ;D

Neither since they didn't originate anything. They just imitated!
I pick Ray Charles, Little Richard, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry as the kings!

Come on guys, give it up! Stop comparing apples with GOLD. Elvis is in a class all by himself and its a mockery to even compare him to those who never could or will ever measure up to all Elvis accomplished. Look at the records that speak for themselves, Elvis outsold Jerry Lee a million to one, look at the imitators to this day- not much demand for Jerry Lee imitators are they? Elvis had more charisma in his little finger than all these "self-induced King nominees" put together. Yes Jerry Lee was talented but so am I yet when it comes to singing voice, looks and stage presence combined with pure entertainer perfection NONE comes close to ELVIS. Just as B.B. King said "there's a reason they call Elvis The King'. And John Lennon said "before there was Elvis there was nothing" and I'd have to add "since Elvis there has been nothing either." You cannot go back in time and compare artist with each other, it only diminshes thier greatness to the uninformed. It's sad that this generation will never get to know the pleasure of having someone like Elvis for thier hero. Please do not insult our intelligence with the likes of the ugly stringy haired Kid Rock or the sadly angry M $ M with or without nuts. Neither can sing a lick and we continue our spiral away from perfection to yelling obscenities and calling it talent? Don't get me started.

Hey, don't diss Jerry Lee. Elvis was really good, but I felt him to be a bit more mainstream, and 'pop' if you will. I just honestly prefer Lewis over Presley.
I should have known I'd get bashed for posting this. Lewis would have been the King of Rock in my opinion if it wasn't for his instrument of choice, the piano. He should have been.
Sure Lewis is a bit more rough around the edges, but I guess I see that as a good thing. I almost always prefer the more outlaw out of two things. I guess it's the Southerner in me. ;D
But anyway, I'm going to close this poll before it leads to a flamefest, which I think it will.

I think Jerry Lee was truer to the music, Elvis had the looks, moves, and the manager who knew how to take that package to the bank.

I would have picked Elvis. I thought he brought more to the stage. (not to take anything away from Jerry Lee though ;))
Don't get me started.
Uhhh... dude, you already got started ::) ;D

Don't shut down on my account Duderino, everyone should feel strongly as you do about who they enjoy as artists. That is why I will defend Elvis with everything that's within me. I too am a southerner (like Elvis was) and i'm not dissing Jerry lee, man he could play that piano like no one else but every artist has thier "duds" Elvis singing "Ito eats" in Blue Hawaii was not his finest moment. His biggest downfall was being loyal to his manager's handling of him. Elvis wanted better movie roles and wanted access to better songs but he trusted the business side to his manager and it cost him dearly. He never really understood the power he actually had.
But you are right there will be a backlash when you try and replace The Real King's throne with an imposter.
I am open to all debates and I'lltry to stay civilized about it but I do however believe what i believe strongly. Till next time....

Of the two choices offered, I went with Elvis... simply because rock evolved into a more guitar driven than piano driven genre, putting Elvis a hair's breadth closer to the title than Jerry Lee, in my mind. But, I agree with Tanya and would have chosen "neither" if that option had been offered.

The Rolling Stones are a collective, a pop group and not a single performer as was Elvis Presley or Jerry Lee Lewis, so the Rolling Stones will no tbe the true kings of pop.

Little Richard might have something to say about this. in fact once in an interview the topic of Elvis came up and LR said in his best feminine voice "well, if Elvis is the King, then who am I" obviously joking that he was the queen ;D it was very funny

Only from the waist up, judging by the television back in the fifties.

Belated karma for mentioning her. Not just a soulful rendition, but pretty risque' lyrics for 1952.
"You ain't nothin' but a hound dog,
Been snoopin' 'round my door.
You can wag your tail,
But I ain't gonna feed you no more."
Hence, the changes to the lyrics that ended up getting sung by Elvis. No disrespect to the King, but having grown up with his version, Willie Mae Thornton's original blew me away the first time I heard it.
Required listening for anyone who wants to understand the shared heritage of rock&roll / rhythm&blues.

That's good one! I also like the original "Shake Rattle and Roll" (C. Calhoun) as recorded by Big Joe Turner before Bill Haley cleaned it up for the whitebread juke joints:
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Well, you get in that kitchen, make some noise with the pots and pans
Well, you wear low dresses, the sun comes shining through
Well, you wear low dresses, the sun comes shining through
I can't believe my eyes all that mess belongs to you
I believe to my soul you're a devil in nylon hose
I believe to my soul you're a devil in nylon hose
Well, the harder I work, the faster my money goes
I said, shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
I'm like a one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
I'm like a one-eyed cat peeping in a seafood store
Well, I can look at you and tell you ain't no child no more
Ah, shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
I said, over the hill and way down underneath
I said, over the hill and way down underneath
You make me roll my eyes, Baby, make me grit my teeth
I said, shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul
