I prefer the music from the SECOND half of the 60's.  There was a lot of really good stuff that came out between 1967 and 1969.  8)

I said second half. A lot of the first half was a bit bubblegumish-not saying that there is anything wrong with bubblegum music. It just doesn't have the same quality or power that the stuff that was written in the second half of the decade did.

Definitely second-half! The talent was more real, more focused and more creative. So many topics are found in the songs of the second half. You had female sexual liberation (or just sexual liberation period), peace, race, the power of certain additives (!), etc to write a song about.

IMHO, the first half was all sugar without any spice or substance.

Well since I'm a big fan of 70s music I'd have to say the second half..
The second half of the 60s music more or less set the stage for the 70s.
The first half kinda sounded more like a softer version of the 50s...or as catwoman put it,bubblegumish

After reading about or watching stuff about the 60s, I decided the later half was the better half.

I think there might be 3 parts though, instead of just 2:

60-62 were the 50's hangover years
63-66 were the gogo dancing years
and 67-69 were the hippie years

Beat boom, Funk, Psychedelia, early roots of Punk, Woodstock Festival, appearance of Hard Rock...etc.

I collect music of the 60's & always find out when the songs are from & when they charted & have also looked into the decade a lot & the truth is the things of the 50's, including music, really lasted throughout the decade, & to a degree the mid-60's were varied with emerging styles coming in side-by-side with the others still there, but the late-60's were very, very varied.

My vote's on the latter half too.  I think it depends partly on your age which you prefer.

The first half wasn't too bad, but it was a little bit too fluffy and just seemed to be running out of ideas. The second half was much better, especially around the mid-sixties. I think my favorite year would be 1966---the music was still go-go yet psychedelic was starting to merge in.

I voted for the second half, although (even though the decade was split evenly) IMO (and I don't mean to nitpick) the decade wasn't divided quite correctly. In my opinion, the modern era of popular music (and culture) really began in 1967.

Being a rock fan I'm going to have to say "later half". 1967-69 produced some of the best music ever!  8)

1967, followed by 1969 and 1966 were the best years for music. 1968 saw a mini-slump, while 1965 was also quite good.

It is the second half for me, with those childhood memories.

Alot of weird stuff came out of the late '60s, period.  Even though they're supposed to be cooler because they were more into drugs and counter-culture hippie garbage, alot of the music itself was even just....goonie.  Doofus-like.  What's with the weird instruments all over the place?  Weird-sounding things that to me were extremely geeky sounding (yes, that includes the Beatles in their latter form).

In any case, the closer it gets to the '50s, the better I like it.  Early '60s wins.

I liked the first half of the 60s best.  Great teen idols like Paul Anka and Bobby Curtola put out some great songs in those years :)

I voted for second half, but I still love ALL '60s music. Think of the great stuff prior to '64 like "Stand By Me," "Blue Velvet" some early Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Monster Mash and all those crazy dance songs (the Chubby Checker stuff, the Orlons, etc).

I have always enjoyed the late half of the 60's more than the earlier half.

Not to say the latter half doesnt have some great tunes. :)

I would have to say the second half, but we owe the change of styles to the Brits, it sort of ended all that solider boy style.  But you can not exclude the folk scene as well. One lesson we learned from the 60's, we as a people can not stop a war no matter how much the country pulls together. It took 5 years after the 60's came to an end. So any idea how long Iraq is gonna last?

1963 was great with variety, wasn't it? ;) I just checked some of the Top 40 hits, and was surprised how many of them I liked, which I thought were from later.

Now that I think about it, '63 was a little era unto itself. Not quite the dead '50s that 1959-62 was, but not the Beatlemania and the British Invasion of 1964+ either. It was definitely starting to evolve even before the Fab 4 on Ed Sullivan (widely considered the beginning of the '60s).

Like there were more bright, cheery pop songs, and a slight rise again in rock (i.e. "Louie Louie"). The Beach Boys and surf rock culture were already popular too.
