Subject: Do you remember the Emergency Broadcast system?
Does anyone here remember the Emergency Broadcast System in the 1960's? You would see the Civil Defense symbol on your TV screen and hear these words"This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast system....this is only a test...then that shrill ear-splitting tone! I used to think it was only used in the event that the "RED NIGHTMARE" was going to start BIG #3,but a friend of mine told me it was also used for weather emergencies and other natural disasters. But I do remember Americans being paranoid about the Russkies in those days! ::)
Subject: Re: Do you remember the Emergency Broadcast system
The EBS was a big deal when civil defense was heavy. We've seen a return to this mentality in the so-called "age of terrorism." For instance, the color-coded terror alert system has a sort of "duck and cover" flavor.
I can't personally remember when the EBS was used for anything other than weather warnings. The tests implied it would be used in other national emergencies.
About seven years ago the EBS was changed to the more practical EAS, the Emergency Alert System. Now all I have to do to send a test or a message at my radio station is press a green button on the control board!
:)

There is a female comedian I saw the other day on one or the other channel I was tuned in to who made a comment something to the effect of that every week for our ENTIRE lives that test came on and told us that it was only a test but in the event of an actual emergency to tune in to that channel for instruction; yet on 9/11, when there REALLY was a national emergency and everyone was gathered around the tv for information and instruction........not a peep out of them!!

I think that if they KNEW the attack was coming(they HAD to the military are NO IDIOTS I hope!)they should have activated the EAS!
Subject: Re: Do you remember the Emergency Broadcast system
Isn't that what an attack is supposed to do? Strike the other party when they are off their guard? I did read somewhere that the FBI and the CIA did receive warnings that something bad was going to happen in the New York area, but they did not know when, and where, and how it was going to happen. I have also heard some people say that movie actor James Woods was on a passenger jet a few days before 911, and saw Arabic men having a private conversation in their native tongue, while looking at lab-top computer diagrams of famous American bridges, buildings, and land-marks. :o He supposedly alerted the FBI but they blew him off. The day after the attack,he was barraged with phone calls from various government, military, and civil defense agencies. Some people claim the US government looked the other way on purpose. After all our country is going through an economic recession, and going to war with other countries is a fast way of jump starting our economy. World War II snapped us out the Great Depression. Korea and Vietnam created new jobs for a lot of Americans. I don't think we will ever be able to distinguish between the facts and urban legends, when it comes to the events of September 11th 2001. Anyway...I apologize for digressing. I too remember the EBS tests. I always breathed a sigh of relief when they ended, and were NOT followed by a newscaster telling us Soviet missiles were headed our way. :-[ Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

The EBS was always sort of a joke to me...
For most of my childhood I lived just 30 miles north of Wash, D.C. and 20 south of Baltimore and 15 from Annapolis.
Camp David is close and there are air bases, army bases & navy bases everywere.
Anyone that ever read anything about a nuclear attack knew that we had exactly 14 mins after a EBS alert (at the soonest) before a warhead came down, the entire area of mid-southern Maryland was a prime target zone.
In 14 mins we were to get in our private jets to get to safe areas in western Virgina or Maryland, I say private jets because this would of been the only way in hell for anyone to make it out of there in time. ::)
In the event of an actual attack we were toast and we knew it.
Because of this, I learned to ingore the EBS test on TV as a older child, just turned the channel or radio station.
I think 9/11 proved how archaic, unreliable & useless it is and was...

We still have the EBS where I live.
Subject: Re: Do you remember the Emergency Broadcast system
My family's Poodle,Pepe, would howl right with the EBS tones! He also would howl when our town's fire siren went off! I used to die laughing every time Pepe did it,I thought it was so darn FUNNY! I learned that dogs do the howling thing because sounds like that hurt their ears.

A dog has been man's best emergency alert system for thousands of years!

If this had been an actual emergency...
Whenever it came on, my brother and I used to try to mimic the announcer's voice and the high-pitched alert sound for as long as it lasted.
We drove our parents nuts, I think!
I remember that I always wanted to hear an actual emergency alert...you know, when you're a kid you don't really consider the ramifications of such a thing!

I remember the EBS during the 80's that this huge noise and some words flashed & went across the screen and someone said" If this would have been an actual emergency, the sound you just heard who have been accompanied by blah, blah, blah and so on and so forth..... ;D

Heh heh... yeah, I remember that. Me and my brothers would then say: "If this had been an actual nuclear emergency, in all likelihood you would be incinerated by now. If by some chance you are still alive, you are instructed to find a safe place, then sit down, put your head between your knees, and kiss your butt goodbye!" ;D :P

If this had been an actual emergency..... :'(
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, I can remember young kids found it very scary. I was in 1st Grade. Living in florida, only
300 miles from Cuba was a frightning thought... at the time.

I wonder if they still do that anymore.... ???

Anyone here remember AIR RAID DRILLS and those "DUCK AND COVER" instructional films? Like that would really save your butt from THE BOMB!
Subject: Re: Do you remember the Emergency Broadcast system
In Canada, there is no real national emergency system. It's usually done provincially. In Alberta we have the "Alberta Emergency Public Warning System", quite a mouthful. I've seen it activated twice. The first was after a tornado hit Central Alberta, they activated it because of a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Then the 911 phone service went out in Northern Alberta and across Alberta we saw the message.
The image looks like some dude took clipart of a thunderbolt and wrote with Times New Roman, "ALBERTA EMERGENCY PUBLIC WARNING SYSTEM".
I think it's one of only a few in Canada.
