You never really can tell what is up for the future. Whatever happens, I want 2060 to be called the 60's again.

Literally, I suspect it will be called 2050  :P

But yes, the 50's sounds logical and it is hard to see how it wont happen for evrything from the 20's onwards through to and including the 90's.

It is only the 00's and the 10's that cause any problem as they sound a bit silly when you say them  :o

I've read references to the 'nineties, 'eighties, and 'seventies (never numerical) for the 1800s decades, but only in 20th century writing (Orwell's essays, for instance), and I've never seen earlier periods referred to by decade.  People thought less in terms of decades back then, I guess.  The first decade I've ever heard called by an epithet is the 1890s, as
"the gay '90s," or "the idle '90s."
I don't know what they called the first decade of the 20th century. Maybe they didn't call it anything.  It's sound perfectly fine to me to call the '10s the "teens."  Some have proposed the "oughties" or the "noughties" for our decade.  Let's hope that doesn't take!  I'd be happy just calling it the zeroes.

Later, this decade will probably be referred to as "turn of the century" or "turn of the millenium."  "Teens" sounds right for the next decade to me, too.  So, maybe "pre-teens" for this decade?

Preteens, I like that!  I had a thought on a related topic.  Those born in the "baby boom" of '40s and '50s are called Boomers.  Can those of us born in the "baby bust" of the '60s and '70s be called Busters?

Yeah I've noticed this too.  I don't think anyone gave a decade a "personality" so to say, back in the olden days.  The earliest this seems to have come about is the 1920's.

I guess in the Western culture, the quickly changing and fickle pop culture--fashions, music demanded a name and certain characteristics.  Blended in ofcourse with whatever political movements or pressing real world issues were going on at the time as well.

I'm pretty sure that most people in 2050 or whenever will look back at everything before 2020 as being a hold over of the Late 20th century, much like the early 20th century was very similar to the late 19th century.
