This is a cool post! I am surprised that there are no Christmas songs listed, though. I like the ones from 1963, 67, and 69.

All rated 5 unless otherwise stated...
1960 - Are You Lonesome Tonight - Elvis Presley
Utterly corny but awesomely executed song. No-one bar Presley could've got away with this! Especially that monologue!
1961 - The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Tokens 4
More corn, but in the nicest possible way...did eventually get to the top here via Tight Fit's needless '82 cover (why?)
1962 - Telstar - Tornadoes
You say 'Tornadoes', we say 'Tornados'! Jaw-droppingly awesome instrumental work influenced by the satellite of the same name...owes a helluva lot to the legendary Joe Meek production - one of the first records to be produced in a living room...!
1963 - Dominique - The Singing Nun 2
Very bizarre! It's said that the innocent tones of the 'Nun' helped to calm America after the Kennedy assassination...whatever - the gee-tar pickin' Sister sold bucketloads! Not my thing tho'...Rather sad end to the story in '85 when she and her lover both committed suicide...
1964 - Come See About Me - Supremes
Confidently brilliant 3 minutes of pop/soul...fantastic...
1965 - Over And Over - The Dave Clark Five 3
Comptetent rendition of the old Bobby Day song, if a bit sanitised...
1966 - Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Words fail to describe its brilliance...try 'incredible' and work your way up from there! An absolute masterpiece!
1967 - Daydream Believer - The Monkees
Another quite fantastic piece of work...
1968 - I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
Recorded prior to Gladys Knights' version (tho' she charted first), this strips the song down to the bare bones and re-presents it as something quite breathtakingly amazing...one of the best menacing 'intros' in popular music...
1969 - Leaving On A Jet Plane - Peter, Paul & Mary 4
John Denver's first big writing success, performed extremely well by the trio...smashing...
