Subject: Why did parents hate Rock music in the 50's &60's?

:oWhy were many parents and other adults against rock music in the 50's and early 60's? What did they think was so bad about it,when much of the early rock songs are CLEAN(at least by today's standards)? What is it that PREACHERS had against it? I bet a lot of kids had to be sneaky about listening to early rock n' roll! Didn't the adults realize rock music was just GOOD FUN back then?

Parents, Preachers, Pop Stars...all have their own agenda, NCN !

I suppose it is just generational change.  It is for me.  As a parent, I finder it harder every day to accept the kind of music my teenage kids like.

My daughter likes Avril Lavigne, and my son, well, I can't even categorise what it is that he likes !  :o

To me it is just so much fluff ....and I guess what I am saying is perhaps that's the trouble parents had then ?  It is so different from the sort of music they were used to.

And, um, ahem !  Clean ?  ??? Try the second line of "Tutti Frutti".  Not the lyrics, how it 'sounds'.... ;)

I can't say that my parents totally hated R&R. I do remember my sister listening to Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" and one of my parents saying, "This song is making me dizzy." But, I think it had to do with the fact that my sister played in over and over and over and over again.

My dad, however, is known to have a couple of Beatles' albums in his possession. But, when my cousin got married in L.A. a few years ago, my brother was so psyched to be staying at the "Hotel California" and my dad said something like, "Yeah, so?" Didn't understand the reference. But, at my wedding, he was out there dancing to R&R so maybe there is hope for him.  ;)

I may be on the wrong track, but I think that music was just plain taken over by the younger generation at that time. I think that the music scene was previously a more adult ruled world. Blues and Jazz, I feel ,were a more mature type music and the younsters hadn't much say in what was out there. When the youngers took over, they let it all hang out and it was like,...."Now it's our turn, and it's past due" When Elvis first hit the stage, people were in shock. That a performer was allowed to suggestively gyrate like he did in the beginning, was unheard of and he had to tone it down. The beginnings of Rock and Roll were like discovering America. Not that I was around then, mind you(ahem) but I read a lot. ;)

Oh, the memories you've brought back.  As I remember, adults had pretty much accepted Elvis Presley in the 60's.  But when the Beatles came along that's about the time all the trouble started.  The preachers would call them perverts because they had long hair, but actually in the beginning, their hair wasn't that long by today's standards and especially not by 70's standards and they wore suits too.  I remember sitting in church and once in awhile the preacher would get down on rock music.  I remember them saying "Day Tripper" was a dirty song and so was "Satisfaction" by the Stones, probably for the line near the end; "And I'm tryin' to make some girl".  But anyway after services like that my radio privileges were taken away but things would cool off after awhile and it was back to rock & roll.  I remember though, when I wasn't supposed to be listening that they'd play the 40 star survey every Friday afternoon after school and I wanted to hear it.  They'd play #40 and go all the way to #1.  I'd put my radio under the pillow and lay on top of the bed and listen to it.  I never got caught either.  There were great songs coming out then, some of the best was "garage rock".  Anyone remember "Try too Hard" by the Dave Clark Five?
