Subject: First Favorite 60's song(s)

Written By: Les_Klepper on 11/30/03 at 01:17 p.m.

If you were growing up in the 60's you had to be familiar with the Beatles.   So maybe I should say what was the first song or songs that were your favorite in the 60's or from the 60's if you grew up later...besides Beatles songs and Rolling Stones songs.  But it's still ok if you mention them.  I think the first Beatles songs I really liked were Paperback Writer and Day Tripper.  Stones songs were Paint it Black and Under my Thumb.  But the first 60's song I liked more than any other was "It's My Life", by the Animals.

Speaking of "Anything bubblegum", remember "Indian Giver" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company?  My favorite group back then was The Monkees (but hey, I was only 10 in 1966).  Remember "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"?  I was crazy about that song but as I got older I started liking the Beatles more, especially the white album.  Anyway, the Monkees and a lot of other groups like The Ohio Express didn't go far in the 70's.  The 60's music I like the most now is by The Stones, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Hollies, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Cream, Iron Butterfly etc.  And to the person who liked "California Dreamin'" by the Mamas and Pappas:  that is a great song that still sounds good today and always will.

Les, we must have a very similar taste in music. 8)
I loved the song Indian Giver - that had completely slipped my mind.  All the others you mention are also favourites.  The 60s saw some terrific Australian artists too - Russell Morris, Zoot, Master's Apprentices, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Easy Beats and many many more.  My older brother had a huge record collection as did my cousins.

Does anyone remember the Honeycombs "Have I The Right" or "Go Back" by Crabby Appleton? (what a name!)  They were great songs.

I've just had this flashback of being at a friend's birthday party and dancing round to "Simon Says" remember that?

The only Australian band you mentioned that I remember are the Easybeats.  I had the song "Friday on my Mind" on 45 and still remember liking the flip side: "Made my bed now I'm gonna lie in it".   I remember "Go Back" really well.  As I recall it was playing during the mid to late summer in 1970, I still have the album.  I do remember "Simon Says" by 1910 Fruitgum Company.  I've got a best of 1910 Fruitgum Co. on CD.

Does anyone besides me have the 4 CD box set called "Nuggets, Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968"?   I think all the songs are by American groups.  Some of them I hadn't heard since then and remembered like "Shape of Things to Come" by Max Frost and the Troopers" and "Blues Theme" by Davie Allan and the Arrows.  One of the songs they left out that should have been there is "Gloria" by Shadows of Knight.

:-X  I was there; let me tell you 65-68 was a heck uv a mixed up time.  The music shows it.  That is one of the least replayed eras.  A real change was going on in music as was the country!  Not a lot of favorite memories from that era!  Don

I wonder if they left out "Gloria" because of a copyright dispute or something?  Bet there aren't a lot of Rolling Stone or Beatles tunes in that one, either.

Les, I have the original vinyl of "Nuggets" on Elektra, which was a double album with a very artsy cover. Here are some I would have included in a follow-up compilation:

"My Girlfriend's A Witch" (October County)
"A Question Of Temperature" (The Balloon Farm)
"I Can Hear The Grass Grow" (The Blues Magoos)
"She's Going Down" (The Nazz)
"American Eagle Tragedy" (Earth Opera)
"Dark On You Now" (Peanut Butter Conspiracy)
"Journey To The Center Of The Mind" (Amboy Dukes)
"Wake Me, Shake Me" (Blues Project)
"Medication" (The Standells)
"Blow My Mind" (The Critters)

Does anybody remember these?
