Subject: Memories of Bob Hope

Written By: Indy Gent on 07/28/03 at 12:27 a.m.

In light of his death last night of pnuemonia, I am taking this time to ask you for your favorite Bob Hope moment. If you like, you can include his favorite movie and his relationships with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour.

Although he was an American citizen through and through, it's widely acknowledged that Bob was born in this country...and on numerous occasions (though obviously not in recent years) he would, without fail, always make a pilgrimage to the town of Eltham (just down the road from me) to see for himself where it all began for him...

The house where he was born, by the way, is still standing...

To me, it's amazing (and also a touching gesture) that the man would go out of his way to do this...but that just gives you an idea of the man he was...

Eltham, in turn, would also honour its' "famous son", when the Bob Hope theatre was opened there many years ago...

My memory isn't exactly about Bob Hope but everytime I heard about Bob with Les Brown and his Band of Renown, I think of my step-father. He used to play the drums with Les Brown when he was with the Blue Devils many, many years ago. All three of them are together now-playing music and cracking jokes.  :'( :'( :'(

Bob Hope was a great guy.  I watched all his Bob Hope specials on tv.  I thought his visits with the Soldiers were wonderful.  He gave them much more than laughs, he helped them through the War.  There won't be another Bob Hope.  Today, we lost a "Giant."

I vividly remember Bob Hope calling me and my friends traitors for opposing the Vietnam War.

In a way, it's too bad. He was a talented dancer and at one time an edgy, interesting comedian. But he wound up aiming--dead accurately--at the lowest common denominator, doing "Boy did I Get a Wrong Number" with Phylis Diller.
