Subject: Does anybody like Doo-wop music?

Written By: Bobby on 07/04/03 at 07:14 p.m.

I love the 'rama-lama ding dong' vocal style of Doo-wop and I wonder if anybody else likes it as much as I do. My favourite songs are . . .

'Step by step' - The Crests
'Sh-boom' - The Crew cuts
'Under the moon of love' and 'Pretty little Angel eyes' - Curtis Lee
'Runaround Sue' - Dion

Amongst others.

I look forward to hearing from you.  :)

Yes Bobby - love it to bits, me...

Some good songs you've mentioned there, although the Crew Cuts version of "Sh-Boom" was actually a white cover of a black original (by the Chords) - however, it is the most well-known version...

The forerunners of the genre were the Inkspots, who were amazingly popular in the 1940's - although not strictly "doo-wop", they did lay the foundations in terms of phrasing the song and the group harmony structure...

Other groups of note:
The Orioles - It's Too Soon To Know
The Crows - Gee
The Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes For You (Excellent!)
The Spaniels - Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight
The Moonglows - Sincerely
The El Dorados - Crazy Little Mama

the list goes on and on...it wasn't very popular here (probably too "urban"), barring one or two exceptions ("Blue Moon" - Marcels) - but over in the US, it was a much different story - there was even a "doo-wop" revival around 1960-61!

And there's also critics who'd say that white groups couldn't emulate the sound as well as the black groups - not so! Dion turned out to be a well-respected performer by his black peers...

Ranging from the sublime to the downright daft ("Rubber Biscuit" by the Chips), it was (and still is) a fine sound...

Speaking of "Rama-Lama Ding-Dong" - check out the song as performed by the Edsels...marvellous!

Paul UK, you have a very eclectic music knowledge - great stuff. I will look up all your suggestions on a certain file sharing program. I have heard of the Inkspots, The Spaniels and The Eldorados.

Doo-wop, like rap, dealt with urban themes. I loved 'Get a job' by The Silhouettes and 'Those oldies but goodies' by Little Caesar and The Romans.

Howard, your dad has great taste in music. I would love to go to a concert in New York!  :D

:DHey Bobby!
I'm a DooWopper from way back!
Grew up in the NYC area in the late 50s listening to the Moonglows, Harptones, Channels, Cleftones etc. on the Alan Freed show.  But one of my top favorite groups is Dion & the Belmonts who appeared at our high school in 1959.  "I Wonder Why" is my alltime fave tune from that era.
They don't write 'em like that anymore!
Keep doowoppin'!

Subject: Re: Does anybody like Doo-wop music?

I'm being loose with the definition, but we sing "Sittin' on Top of the World" and "Hello Marilou" that are arranged in a barbershop approximation of doo-wop.  Also, we sing Billy Joel's "Longest Time" which is a tribute to doo-wop.

I don't know much about doo-wop, but the more I hear, the more I like.  Thank PBS for Sha Na Na and those pledge breaks with all the old reunited doo-wop groups!

Modified to add:  I just realised that you are from the UK so I'll explain that the Public Broadcasting System is a network of television stations in the United States that run on donated money.  Instead of commercials, they have pledge drives throughout the year and air specials that are interrupted with pleas for money.  Although I live in Canada we have PBS stations on cable.

'The Longest Time' by Billy Joel is one of my favourites! I would class that as Doo-wop with the harmonizing and that.

Also, thanks for the explanation of PBS stations.

For anybody in the midAtlantic states who can pick up Baltimore area stations, WQSR-FM (102.7) plays the "good old stuff" on Sunday nights after 8.  "Forgotten 45s" is the name of the show. The later it gets, toward midnight, the more romantic doo-wop they play (No, this is not a paid advertisement).

1. Good bye  baby bop bop
2. I was wrong pretty baby bop bop
3. You were right pretty baby bop bop
repeat verse 1 a few times and add an extra "baby", i.e.

gooooood bye baby BABY bop bop (repeat and fade)

Blue... moon... you knew just what I was there for...

And then I forget the words to the rest of it.

I quite liked a lot of the doo-wop stuff... mainly Dion (w/ or w/o the Belmonts). Runaround Sue and I Wonder Why have me singing along all the time (though the vocal range on I Wonder Why is a hard one to cope with...

Along with the early Jan and Dean stuff... mainly Baby Talk, which I always liked... (though I did prefer the version played in the movie Dead Man's Curve to the one I've heard as the recorded version)

"Mmm bop mmm bop mmm bop bop
Mmm bop mmm bop . . .  bop bop"

Something like that. It's nice to know Dion and the Bellmonts are well liked on the boards. They were brilliant!  :D

I love Blue Moon by The Marcels as well, let's see if I can do the chorus.

"Bomp ba ba bomp ba bomp ba bomp bomp, da danga dang dang, da ding a dong ding Blue moon . . ."

Heh heh! Just about.

I remember the old Jive Bunny medleys of the very late eighties, Howard. I'm not sure if anybody beyond the UK have heard of him but basically it was two producers mixing old tracks behind the persona of an animated rabbit.

The first track that got into the charts was called 'Swing the mood' and it featured a lot of Rock 'n' roll classics - Runaround Sue by Dion and Shout shout (knock yourself out) by Ernie Maresca. I liked these records and so tried to look for similar stuff - hence my love of doo-wop.

Could you give me a list of recommended songs, Howard?

Thanks very much for the list, Hairspray. I think I have a lot of those. The Dell-Vikings, The Five Satins and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs are brill (last two feature in 'Dirty Dancing').

I think I've got a bit of downloading to do.  ;)

I'm so glad you have a varied (and great) taste in music as well, Hairspray.  :D

I love Doo-wop music.  My husband is particularly good at singing doo-wop tunes - takes a few beers though!!

Aussie band Daddy Cool recorded a doo-wop song, Bom Bom in the 70s - it's a great song too.

Cheers   :)

I'm going to have to look out for that group. I know the British group Darts in the 70s did doo-wop music and they were great - they did a cover of Duke of Earl which was better than Gene Chandler's (But don't tell anyone I said that . . .)

No, never been to a Doo-wop concert.  I don't even know if they happen in this part of the world.  I should check out the gig guides more closely.

OK, think about that dance you went to at age 13 (usually at the Waterworks, with the real radio dj spinning his mountain of 45s, "2 Faces Have I was" was a great song and everyone sang along...so here we go:

2 faces have I.... ya ah-iiii, yay yay yay yah ah ah ah ah ah,
ahiiii yah ah-iii, yay yay yay ya ah ah ah... (then some lyrics but I forgot 'em, help anywone!)

End Quote

Alan Lee's Sunday nites - I can't believe he's still there.  I think he still owns Roadhouse Oldies in Glen Burnie.  I went there ONCE - ages ago.  Bought a Platters album there.

I say that cuz WQSR just keeps moving w/the times (so to speak) - they seem to cater most to whomever is the 40ish crowd.  Now they play alot more '70s w/a good deal of '60s still there.  It's been a big disappointment to me (not that I dislike that music - it's just I like to hear '50s and that was my only way).  So given their tendencies, I'm surprised Alan Lee is still allowed his "obscure" '50s doo-wop show.

I found a strong Hagerstown station that almost always still plays mostly '50s/'60s things.  It's 106.9 and most central MD can still manage to receive it.

Don't remmeber all the lyrics, but here's some that I do:

I pretend that I'm happy (sha-la-lee)
But I'm Mr. Blue (sha-la-loo)
I pretend that I'm happy (sha-la-lee)
Since I lost you
(Oh hoh no, no, no, no, no, no nonono) (Repeat)
Two faces have I (ah-ah-ah-I)
One to laugh and one to cry (ah-ah-ah-I)
Two faces have I
Oooonnne to laugh and one to cry (ah-ah-ah-I) (Repeat)

Next verse:
I pretend that I'm carefree (sha-la-lee)
My heart is ??? (something that rhymes with lie)
I pretend that I'm carefree (sha-la-lee)
But I'm living a lie (oh no no, no, etc., concludes same way)

If so, I remember my grandad singing that song though I didn't know it was a song (as I often thought he was just singing out of his head). I will look out for that song.

I live in Pittsburgh, which is still one of the biggest cities in the country in matters of keeping doo-wop alive. As a matter of fact, it was our local PBS station that put together all of those recent oldies concerts (including the doo-wop one) on PBS.
Doo-wop is as much a part of Pittsburgh as Heinz ketchup and the Steelers, and I love 'em all!
