Immortal.  I've never seen them in concert but I have their greatest hits album and it's fantastic.  Bill Medley has an awesome voice.

I remember most of these.

Lovin Spoonful-Do you Believe in Magic, Summer in the City.

Tony and the Tigers-don't remember

The Byrds-Never really cared for them.    8 Miles High, Turn, Turn, Turn, Hey, Mr. Tamberine Man (a Bob Dylan song).

The Castaways-I remember the name but not what they sang.

Herman's Hermits-I love these guys. Peter Noone was the lead singer. I have their greatest hits volume I and II. They came to my area when I was kid but I don't remember seeing them. I think my sisters did.      Henry VIII, Something Tells me I'm into Something Good, There's a Kind of Hush, Mrs. Brown you got a Lovely Daughter...and so many more.

Righteous Bros.-These guys are great.    You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling, Unchained Melody.

Lesley Gore-It's My Party (and the sequal) It's Judy's Turn to Cry.

Billie Joe Royal-Again, know the name but not any of the songs.

Brenda Lee-Music, Music, Music.

Freddie and the Dreamers-Ah, yes. Another from the orginal British invation. I'm Telling you Now, (and I believe) Do the Freddie.

Mike Clifford-Don't remember

Jay and the Americans-Again, know the name but not the songs.

Tony and the Tigers (Tony was Soupy Sales son) never heard a song by them either!
Billy Joy royal (from Marietta, GA near Atlanta where I'm from) was famous for a song called "Down in the Boondocks," remember?
Jay and the Americans did "only in America" and "Come a Little Bit Closer"
Have a great weekend!

Well, bj...although I'm (allegedly!) far too young to have seen these people in action (except on film in rare occurences), I do know a few of 'em...

Lovin' Spoonful - great band, real good-time stuff. Were never that popular here compared to the US, but most over a certain age will know "Daydream" and "Summer In The City" (I prefer "Younger Girl" myself...)

Byrds - another great band, and more influential than they were given credit for at the outset...only a handful of big ones here, "Tambourine Man", "All I Really Want To Do" - my fave, "Eight Miles High"...

Castaways - "Liar Liar, pants on fire!" whatta lyric - great piece of garage-rock...never charted here...

Herman's Hermits - Manchester's finest (well, apart from the Hollies!) - real chirpy group - huge almost everywhere! Amazingly their two US #1's ("Mrs Brown", "Henry the 8th") were never issued here! My fave - "No Milk Today"

Righteous Brothers - great duo...OK, so "Lovin' Feelin'" and "Unchained Melody" are a tad overplayed! "Ebb Tide" is a belter tho' - a great build-up...

Lesley Gore only had one major success here (betcha can't guess what with!) - Twee but enjoyable girlie pop..."You Don't Own Me" (which isn't twee...) blew me out of the water when I first discovered it...

Billy Joe Royal tickled our sellers with "Boondocks" which I still enjoy...

Brenda Lee - Legend! - Still packing 'em in today...hope she tours here again, wouldn't mind going along to see her...Favourite? There's so many! "Sweet Nothin's" for sheer daftness and RNR combined...

Freddie & Dreamers - more Manchester...a bit of a novelty act, really...I can stand their stuff, but don't go overboard on it...Fave, "You Were Made For Me" - twee, but catchy...

Mike Clifford - "Close To Cathy" was the biggie (non-starter here...) - see what you've done? I haven't heard that in ages, so I'm gonna have to dig it out!!

Ah, you save the best for last...

Jay & The Americans - fantastic group...featured two different lead singers at different times, both as good as each other. Didn't even get a sniff of a charter here...My fave "Living Above Your Head" (a stormer!) - but almost anything of theirs is worthy...great stuff

Only one I've not heard of - Tony & The Tigers...

...but 11 out of 12 - that's not bad, eh?

Regards

Thanks everyone, you answered them all!  Here are some new ones, what do you remember about them?

Chad & Jeremy
Peter & Gordon
Cynthia Lennon
The Vejtables (Jan Ashton was the drummer, who's she?)
Dino, Desi, and Billy
Beau Brummels
The Yardbirds
The Mersybeats (heard one of their songs once, kind of mild Liverpool, Beatlesque style, but they never really made it big in the U.S.)
Gary Lewis & the Playboys

I know just a few from this batch. Most of them I really can't recall what songs they sang.

Chad and Jeremy-can't remember what they sang.

Peter and Gordon-Lady Godiva

Dino, Desi, and Billy-can't remember what they sang but they were the "next generation" Dean Martin's kid, Desi Arnez Jr. and...I can't remember who's kid Billy was.

The Yardbirds-can't remember what they sang.

Gary Lewis and the Playboys-again I can't remember what they sang.

I must be having a senior moment because I can't remember. ;)

All the others, I have never heard of.

Gary Lewis and The Playboys - The first concert I ever attended in 1963 or 64.  Everybody Loves a Clown, This Diamond Ring
The Yardbirds - For Your Love
Peter and Gordon - A World Without Love
On your previous list Brenda Lee.  I was born and raised in Nashville and she used to go roller skating at the Hippodrome Roller Rink on West End Ave. in Nashville when she was just starting to be a star. My family used to go skating there frequently.  They used to play her songs (Sweet Nothins', etc) for skating.
Lovin' Spoonful - John Sebastian - Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?

Okay - this is getting fun, and you all have given me some neat rushes of memory!

Let's see, Peter & Gordon - World without love
Chad & Jeremy, As Tears (time?) Goes By
Cynthia Lennon was John Lennon's wife, don't know what else she did, but she had a spread in Feb. 1966, "16 Magazine."
Jan Ashton (found her in Google) she was a cutsie flower girl lead singer/drummer, never made it too big apparently.
Dino, Desi, and Billy (a family friend of Dino & Desi of Phillipino decent) made a one (small hit) wonder that sounded like Louie Louie.
Beau Brummels - good rock group, "Laugh Laugh," "Cry Just a Little," saw them on Shindig.
The Yardbirds did a wild number in the movie "Blow Up"
Mersybeats (pronounced, Muh-Z-beats) think I heard them once.
Gary Lewis - good melodic group, "Everybody Loves a Clown," Count Me, lots of good hits.

Luke Halpin
dave Clark 5
Robert Vaughn
Keith Allison
Chris Jones
Jill Stuart
Dick and DeeDee

Dave Clark 5 had several hits in the UK usually with a stomping bass drum.  Bits and Pieces is the one that springs to mind.

Wasn't David McCallum in The Man from UNCLE?

Haven't heard of any of the others in that list

Subject: Re: Who remembers?

A few more...

Chad (Stuart) & Jeremy (Clyde) found more fame in the US than in their homeland (here), with only one hit to their credit, the excellent "Yesterday's Gone" - such was their fame in the US, that they actually became citizens in the mid 1960's...kind of a folky sound, which leads us nicely to...

Peter (Asher) & Gordon (Waller) - another Brit duo who were big in the US, but also here...couldn't really fail if your sister was going out with a Beatle! Macca donated "World Without Love" to them, which went #1 almost everywhere...my fave was the "other" song Macca wrote under a psedonym - "Woman" - Peter went into record production when the hits dried up (Linda Ronstadt, most notably) - but whatever's happened to Gordon...

The Yardbirds - great group! Notably the breeding ground for the odd guitarist or two..! Clapton, Beck & Page in there at certain times...extremely versatile group who could go from Blues to full-blown Psych in an instant...vocalist Keith Relf was sadly accidentally electrocuted in 1976...

The Beau Brummels - I "discovered" these many years ago, as I was getting into 60's US music - SF group, I believe, with a penchant for wearing loud clothing! One of the first wave of US "answer" groups to the Beatles - only a handful of hits, of which "Laugh Laugh" was the best...

The Merseybeats were indeed from Liverpool (where the river is) - a lower-draw outfit (that's not meant derogatory, btw) who were a lot more mellower than their counterparts - you may have heard their biggest hit "I Think Of You" - group split in 1966 and the remainder became the Merseys who hit big with "Sorrow" - covered later by Bowie...still big on the continent and still do the odd tour here...

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - another great group who didn't achieve much over here...nice, breezy, 60's pop - how could it fail? But it did! They did have a hit here in 1975 with a re-issue of "My Heart's Symphony" - and that was only because it was passed off as a "soul" record, would you believe? My fave - the driving "She's Just My Style"...

David McCallum was indeed in the Man From UNCLE - Kuryakin, I think - and he actually issued a couple of albums on the back of this success...incidentally, his father was part of the orchestra who played on "Sgt. Pepper" and also "claims" to have demonstrated the violin-bow-on-guitar technique to a certain Mr James Page...

Very informative< Paul UK, always a welcome guest as with you all!  Remember the movie "Flipper?"  Luke Halpin was the kid who befriended our good friend Flipper.
David McCallum was indeed Ilya Kuryakin in "Uncle" and Robert Vaughn was the Man.

Chris Jones though deserves special mention as he probably set the tone of the late 60s, early 70s, as a James Dean like character.  Anybody know more about Chris? (he was married to Claire Bloom).

Keith Allison was a regular on Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is"
Dick & DeeDee were a pop mid 60s duo who I believe did "Mountain High," had a nice raw sexy 60s quality in their sound.

The McCoys
the Gentrys
Jane Asher
Zak Starkey
Lola Filana
David Winters
George Maharis
John Phillip Law
Donavan

Anyone have info on 'em?

I have heard of the McCoys but I'm getting a mind-blank again.

Donavon-Mellow Yellow, Jennifer, Juniper, so many others but again-I think old age may be setting in.  ;)

Lola Filana-can't quite remember what she sang but I do remember her.

The others-never heard of.

Ah! The McCoys - marvellous piece of proto-punk with "Hang On Sloopy", which over here, was the first release on Andrew Loog-Oldham's (Stones manager) Immediate label...almost every party I went to in the 1970's played this, along with Sam The Sham's "Woolly Bully" - still popular then and now...
Rick Derringer went on to become a famous artist/producer in his own right - remember Weird Al's "Eat It"? That's him doing that lead guitar parody...

The Gentrys only biggish one "Keep On Dancing" was wonderfully lo-fi! Part of its charm, I s'pose...wasn't popular here, but a few years later the song achieved some success via a rendition by the Bay City Rollers (of all people!)

Jane Asher was (and still is!) the sister of Peter Asher. She was going out with McCartney once the Beatles started to get going, and he donated songs to Peter & Gordon...can't really get much luckier that that, can you? She still makes the odd appearance on TV here - teaching everyone how to make weird and wonderful cakes! But would she be doing that if Macca had married her? Perhaps we'll never know...

Zak Stakey is Ringo's boy (with Maureen, I think) - a drummer also, he's played with The Who and currently drums for his dad's band on rare occasions...

Donovan (Leitch) was a fine singer/songwriter...shot to fame when he appeared on popular 1960's UK pop progamme "Ready, Steady, Go" - first and foremost regarded as a Dylan copyist, he developed a style all his own once he changed managers and started working with the recently departed Mickie Most. His biggest success "Sunshine Superman" is cited as being one of the first excursions into beat/psych...all good stuff, but I prefer the singalong "Atlantis"...still makes the odd appearance here and there...

Not really sure on the rest, but I have heard George Maharis mentioned once or twice...

Sadly bj, I've no idea - I do know that some videos were released many years ago here in the UK, but they're long-deleted...even so, they probably wouldn't be compatible with US machines...

The archive is owned by Dave Clark - of Dave Clark Five fame - who is notoriously reluctant to have his "property" splashed about the place...

However, you can read a potted history of the show (and pics) by going to:

http://www.sixtiescity.com/PopTV/RSG.htm

But...a bit of better news...roughly on the same theme...

You'll no doubt remember the fabulous acts that appeared on the Ed Sullivan show...well, Rhino have brought out a gut-wrenching 9 DVD box-set of some classic performances from the show including: (deep breath...)

The Four Tops, Lovin' Spoonful, Tom Jones, Association, Mamas & Papas, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Supremes, Temptations, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Doors, and tons more, including some group known as The Beatles...!

I think it's just been released, but sounds well worth checking out...the name of the package is entitled...

ED SULLIVAN'S ROCK 'N' ROLL CLASSICS (Rhino R2 976082)

...brief glimpse at http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=976082

Mind you, at a wallet-empyting $170, it may be something you'd want to start saving up for!

Happy listening/viewing...

Robert Vaughn currently appears in any number of cheesy ads for personal injury attorneys, including Michigan's own Sam Bernstein. He generally appears at the end of said ads, where he gives a "tough, no-nonsense" rap about how if you have been injured, you need to tell the insurance company that "you mean business!" by calling the attorney being advertised. He ends the Sam Bernstein ad with a somewhat quiet yet forceful (and also very over the top cheesy) "call 1-800-CALL-SAM...Sam Bernstein...Right now!"

Well, once I met Joe Butler of the Loving Spoonful when he gave a friend of mine a ride  to my home in upstate New York, but my most vivid memory of TLS was the widespread use of their album covers as doormats after they turned in their drug dealer in exchange for their own freedom.

Lovin Spoonful - love the song Nashville Cats, Summer In The City
The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn

Righteous Bros. - like all of their stuff
Lesley Gore -  It's My Party
Billie Joe Royal - Blanket On The Ground ?
Brenda Lee -  can't think of any songs off the top of my head
Freddie and the Dreamers - Ferry 'Cross The Mersey
Jay and the Americans - She Cried
The McCoys - Hang on Sloopy
Donovan - England's answer to Bob Dylan!  Love Mellow Yellow, Catch The Wind and Sunshine Superman.  My brother had an LP with a song on it called "The Intergalactic Laxative" which used to be very amusing.

These songs and artists were all my older brothers' and sisters' favourites.

Thanks for all the memories, wow Fagen and Becker backed Jay and the Americans! Anyone have info on the young ladies at the time, Hayley Mills, Patti Duke, and Sally Field?  All were in their late teens in '65, and I was hopelessly in love with Hayley (have a 9 year old by the same name).
