Subject: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
I remember that it was ranked as TV Guide's 42nd worst tv show of All Time.
I saw a couple of episodes on TV Land & don't quite understand why it was considered "bad".
I thought it was OK, but a bit cornier compared to "Full House".
I'm more into dramas like "CSI" and "Platinum" than sitcoms.
I've read that Sally Field now regrets the show, but that's her opinion like Madonna dissing her earlier work. And I LOVE classic Madonna. Back to the subject.
What was bad about the show.
Does it stand the test of time?
Was it considered bad when it first aired?
Was it bad, but was the most watched show of it's time like "Friends"?
And the same with "Hogan's Heroes". I never saw it, but I've heard that it was a classic, but TV Guide ranked it as their #5 worst tv show.
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
It wasn't too flash, truth be known, but Sally Field was cute ;D
As for Hogan's Heroes, methinks the rating has been influenced somewhat by the dreaded insipid concept of political correctness ::) >:(
Gimme Hogan's Heroes over the dross that is "Friends" any day :D

I think Fuss is rite. (On both counts.) In some ways I think it's a strange depiction but hey, there have been other strange arrangements.
My grandfather LOVED "Hogan's Heroes". And he was about as German as you can be w/o being from Germany. I think it was in re-runs when I was alive, but he'd be watching them! He also love "Perry Mason". Those were his 2 fave shows, I'm pretty sure.
Sorry to go OT, but just had to comment. Wish I could comment on "Flying Nun", but altho I knew of it, I don't think I ever glimpsed a single show.
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
Well, "The Flying Nun" airs somewhere during the night (before "Mac Gyver") in TV Land.
Just in case if anybody wants to see it for him/herself. :D
And Sally Field was cute though...still looks good.
Still, why would TV Guide rank it.
If it was that bad, why TV Land airs it.
"Full House" & "Charles In Charge" should've been on the worst list.
And for "Hogan's Heroes" being "politically incorrect", what about "The Man Show" and "Will & Grace".
Not to mention classics like "F Troop" and classic Norman Lear shows like "All In The Family" & "Good Times"?

When I was kid and used to watch the Flying Nun, I used to think that Sister Batrille should have hooked up with Carlos (yes, I was a romantic back than). I didn't know that nuns weren't supposed to do things like that. ;)

"The Flying Nun" was an OK show, but I prefer "Gidget". 8)
It was a quirky sitcom about an airbourne novice, a casino owning playboy, a strict Reverend Mother, and another nun who messes up her vocabulary, who's now the wisecracking maid on "Will & Grace".
If Sister Bertrille were to hook up with Carlos, it would cause controversy & the Catholic Church & ABC television would be furious. Then the show would've end in disgrace.
BTW, there were sexual tensions between Sister Betrille & Carlos.
That's probably how far they went. The writers probably didn't want to cause an uproar.
If it were "The Flying Receptionist" or "The Flying Lawyer", it would be OK.

Charles in Charge didn't make this list but HH did? That's pathetic.
I'm OK w/Full House altho maybe it was too cutesie. I didn't watch it much - that father-guy is annoying (I hated AFV partly cuz of him), but I loved looking at his brothers! ;D

Me too, I always hoped they'd hook up and she'd leave the order ! LOL ! ;D

Hi, Real Slim ~ :)
My friends and I loved watching The Flying Nun when we were kids. I don't have cable now or I'd be watching it.The concept of a human being able to fly simply by wearing a certain hat was a weird concept, so I guess the concept is what was thought of as being dorky.
As I recall, it had all veteran actors and I do not remember the acting being bad. Alejandro Rey was in it and I had a crush on him ! ;D
Hogans Heroes was GREAT !!! Little did we know about Bob Crane's life back than, but who cared. Those were the days when you didn't have actor's lives constantly talked about in the media to the extent they do it today. I also like the British "version" of Hogans Heroes - " 'Allo, 'Allo "
Neither show was bad as far as I am concerned. 8)

Another show I forgot to mention was "Eight Is Enough"
It should have been called "Eight is Eight Too Many" or at the very least "Eight is One Too Many"
Dick Van Patten annoyed the crap outta me - I just wanted to reach into the set and throttle him. Can't really say why - just did !
FB ;D

I did a paper for a class a long time ago about how "realistic" television was and I said something to the fact that a family had 8 well behavied children and you had trouble with your two-or something like that.

Ironically, the shows from the reality genre are not realistic... much like the fantasy sitcoms of the 1960's.
I mean, who on earth are like "Survivor" or "The Bachelor"?

Well, I probably know why Sally Field regerts being on "The Flying Nun". ::)
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
"The Flying Nun" was cheesy, but I prefer watching "Gidget" instead. :D
It was an OK show for it's time period.
And Sally Field would eventually end up as a serious 2 time Academy Award winning actress.
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
I don't like "The Flying Nun", I really don't like "The Flying Nun".
It reminds me of the "Whatzupwitu" music video from Eddie Murphy & Michael Jackson.
And judging by the picture of Sally Field, she must've took a lot of <#$*&^> from the series and had to wear the hat while being carried with wires. :P
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
I did some research on the internet movie data base & found out tht Shelly Morrison from "Will & Grace", another show I can't stand, was on the show.
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
I think it's a great show; what's not cool about a nun that can fly??
Subject: Re: Was "The Flying Nun" really that bad?
I tried to join the International Flying Nun Fan Club many months ago, but the people never wrote me back! :(

Yeah, Dick Van Patten was a dipwad. But the two cast members who REALLY annoyed me were:
Betty Buckley - She simply seemed "fake" and I could not believe her in that role.
Dianne Kay - Somehow she always looked like she had no teeth in her mouth.
While the show was airing, little did we know that Willie Aames would go on to fame and fortune in Charles in Charge.

"Eight is Enough" was just a suburban "Waltons." Tuna on white. Thanks, but no thanks. "Charles in Charge"? I can't believe I used to watch that show. OMG! :-[

;DI loved The Flying Nun. Sister Betrille was a nut.
In fact Im going to make a costume just like hers and wear it.

Ah! I had a book as a child, called "Sister Betrille and the Miracle at San Tanco." Carlos buys an island with a huge castle on it and plans to turn it into a gambling resort. Sister thinks it should be an amusement place for children and keeps bugging him to change his plans. She flies over to the island on a Friday looking for Carlos and wanders down into the depths of the castle dungeons. And falls into an obliette. Carlos is already in the obliette, having blundered in earlier in the dark. They are stuck there until the workmen return on Monday if they don't find a way out, and he points out that this might not be too good for her reputation. Much to my annoyance, they did find a way out, but the possibilities running thru my imagination were endless. I think I can trace all my kinky fantasies back to that dungeon scene in that kids book! ;D ;)

I love watching reruns of that show because I've been in the house where it was filmed several times. I particularly love the scenes where someone hops in the car and peels out of the driveway to the left because the house is on a dead-end street and 'left' only goes about 30 feet! ;D And incidentally, the house was haunted. The people I knew who lived there saw the ghost on numerous occasions.... :)
