Subject: The Weight
Can anybody help me to understand the lyrics to The Band's "The Weight"?
First of all what does "I pulled into nazareth" supposed to mean? And who the hell is Fanny?
Also what does he mean by Carmen and the devil walking side by side?
Subject: Re: The Weight
And another thing I always wanted to know.
Is it Fanny, or is it Annie?
Subject: Re: The Weight
Well the last two lines are :
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone
So it's Fanny.
I always assumed Nazareth was a place, not necessarily in the biblical sense though...
FB ???

I asked this same question a while back. Search for old posts (try the misheard lyrics section of the board).

Well, jeez, what do you think it means? It's about karma, consequences, and your inescapable responsibility as a sentient being in a fallen world. Excuse me, but isn't that obvious? "Take a load off Fannie and you put the load right on me." What goes around comes around. Thursday's your turn in the barrel. etc.

As I remember... The Band sing the word "off Fanny". Travis, being the more tasteful bunch they seem, sing "off Annie". Sounds t'same to a lotta people I know...

But they are saying Fanny, because I've read the lyrics at multiple sites.

In the version recorded by Jimmy Barnes and the Badloves here in Australia, they sing "Annie" because here "Fanny" is a very, very bad word.
;)

Don't think it's Annie or Fanny, listen carefully to the song, it's FRannie.

What does it mean ???
Subject: Re: The Weight
What the Americans call a fanny-pack, the Aussies call a bum-bag. Mainly because a fanny refers to a location on the oppposite part of the body... ;)
