Subject: late 30s song
:-/ Sixty years ago I heard this dumb song, Mair-sie doats, doz-ee doats, and little lambsie divey. Thought it was siilly, tried to forget it, and the more I tried, the more the dumb thing ran through my head. Well, twenty years ago I read an article in the newpaper about old songs, and nearly fell over. It was "Mares eat oats, does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy." I claim the do-do-prize!

You truly are the proclaimed monarch of misheard lyric perceptivity. And to think it took 55 more years for this site to come up. Longest-standing misheard lyric? You have a case...

Except... my mother used to sing that song ALL the time, and if you looked up the lyrics, half of them were written: Mair-sie doats, doz-ee doats, and little lambsie divey.
The confusion and mistake was perfectly understandable. Songs were sillier back then.

I had a copy of it on 78 rpm and the title was Marezy Doats so the confusion. Actually I think someone may have just tried to make sense out of it, which spoiled all of the fun.

I read that your lyrics are correct, Pat Forseth! The song is meant to teach children to enunciate when speaking correctly.
Maerzee dotes and dozee dotes and little lamsee divey
a kiddle ee iveetoo, wouldn't you?
Actual lyric:
Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy,
A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you?
(Children's Song)
The "misunderstood" lyrics here are actually correct. The song is gibberish. It is meant to teach a child enunciate when learning to sing/speak.
