Subject: Silly Songs

Written By: kanuni on 10/05/02 at 07:00 a.m.

Hi there. I am starting a collection of "silly songs", and am looking for suggestions (clean ones preferably). The type of thing Iam after is things like Charlie Drake singing "I've lost the end of my yodel" or Tommy Steele singing "Flash,Bang, Wallop", or Anthony Newley's "Strawberry Fair". Any offers would be most welcome. Thanks.

..I think you'll find it's "I'm walking backwards for christmas" ;-)

...but also the Ying Tong song by the Goons
and The Bricklayer's Song by Ray Stevens

How clean are we talking, here?  I have an almost inexhaustible repertoire of silly songs (:-)), most of which aren't particularly clean...

Ernie, The Fastest Milkman in the West (Benny Hill), or even The Andalucian Gypsies by Benny Hill
Frankie Howerd's version of Je T'Aime
Right Said Fred by Bernard Cribbins

anything by Tom Lehrer (clean), Jake Thackray (risqué), Ivor Biggun (naughty) or Kevin Bloody Wilson (just plain crude)

"My Ding-A-Ling" by Chuck Berry  ;D

First of all, I have to say that even this is the before-the-70's area, there are songs of this kind that touch on all decades, so my list is no exception. Also, this list will consist of intentionally as well as unintentionally crazy songs.
Now...Where do I begin? I have a collection of records of out-of-there songs. I'll try to think of some here, and I may write more here later as I think of them.

"Isn't it nice" - Porrazzo. Also, "Kenny" from the same album. What were they thinking?

"There'll Be No Black Lung Up In Heaven" - Joe Freeman (Now I'm a Christian, guys, but I know that there are some gospel songs that are dumb.)

"Frosty, the Snowman" - Brady Bunch. Cindy sounds like The Exorcist.

"Leader of the Laundromat" - The Detergents. A novelty version of "Leader of the Pack".

"Kechak Fantasy" - Voyage. A pretty wierd song consisting of people chanting "Kechak, kechak, kechak, kechak" throughout. What the heck is a kechak?

"Meet the Boys on the Battlefront" - Wild Tchoupitoulas ("Wild Tchoupitoulas gonna stomp some rump")

"Dynomite" - Tony Camillo's BAZUKA. Mostly an instrumental disco song, with someone doing immitations of J.J. and James Evans once in a while.

"Kiss in the Dark" - Pink Lady. Although their version of "Walk Away, Renee" is harder to believe.
That's all for right now. More later maybe.

Yes, Bobby Darrin, simply "Splish Splash".  The difference I see in this and the others (from what I know) is that this was a big hit.  It was a tribute to big rock hits of the preceding few years.    :)

As far as silly songs - Anyone know "Ape Call"?   ;D  Nervous Norvus in the '50s; flip side is "Wild Dogs of KY" - also silly but not the relative hit "Ape Call" was.

Ray Stevens--Ahab the Arab; Gitarzan
Allan Sherman--Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah!; The 12 Gifts of Christmas (hilarious!)
Homer & Jethro--The Battle of Kookamonga (the flip side, which is a spoof of Stonewall Jackson's "Waterloo", is also a laugh riot!)
Larry Groce (host of "Mountain Stage," West Virginia's best-known public radio (and now TV) program)--Junk Food Junkie

I could go on and on…

Wow.  I just googled Dr Demento and found a playlist of his from 1974.  Is anybody familiar with Leonard Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"?

I suppose Philbo Baggins will parody it with a song about himself…

"Fish Heads" is done by Barnes & Barnes.  Fish heads, fish heads, roly-poly fish heads…

Yes Bobby Darrin was good, but Charlie Drake's version of Splish, Splash was Funnier.

Oh yeah, and how about the MTA song recorded by The Kingston Trio... "Did he ever return? No he never returned and his fate is still unlearned... he may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston, he's the man who never returned..."

The classic (and my themesong) would have to be "They're Coming to Take me Away."

FYI-yes I remember the song "Ape Call" and Lenard Nimoy's "Bilbo Baggins." I have also been listening to Dr. Demento since the early 70s.

??? I was visiting with a friend of mine... we got to talking about old songs... parodies... and there was one... from the song... "On Top of Old Smokey"....  the parody was entitled.. "On top of Spaghetti"....  a few words... "on top of spa-ghetti.... all covered with cheese.... I lost my poor meat--ball when somebody sneezed.... it rolled off the ta--ble... and onto the floor.....   I lost my poor meat-ball, when it rolled out the door....."...   ;D  ANYWAY.... I would like to get the rest of the words to the song... and possibly a recording of the song itself... I don't know who did it... but, I do know it was in the '60s that I remember hearing it...  wondering if anyone could help me with this... Does anyone remember or have access to this song and the words... :-/
