IMO, They had MUCH better songs than "Joy To The World.  What are you favorites by them and soes anyone know what thier name meant?  I do, but that's only because I have nothing better to do than research trivial things ;) Here's my list
1. One               Makes sense, right? :D
2. Easy To Be Hard          Keep a clean mind!
3. Out In The Country
4. Eli's Comin'
5. Mama Told Me Not To Come

I think this rounds out their 'greatest hits', but each is a classic in my book:

Old Fashioned Love Song
Shambala
Never Been To Spain
Black & White
Celebrate

To my knowledge the term "three dog night" comes from the Aborigines of Australia and means "very cold night."  You see, the coldness of the nights depends on how many dogs sleep with the person, and a "three dog night" is a very cold night indeed…

Other songs I like that haven't been mentioned:

The Show Must Go On (their last big hit from 1974)
Liar

I like their version of "Easy To Be Hard" as well. Not as much as I like the other version, but there you go.

Speaking from an Aussie perspective, I don't know about the authenticity of Crazydon's explanation, but that's certainly along the lines of the explanation I had heard.

Either aborigines, or eskimos sleeping with huskies or along that line........

I liked "One"

"Black and White", "Let Me Serenade You" and "Shambala" are my favorites.  They may have not had the commercial success as some of their greatest hits but they are fantastic songs.

Definitely agree; actually, I'm not very fond of "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog".  And of course, that's the 1 most frequently played.    :-/

Old-Fashioned Love Song
Mama Told Me Not to Come
Black&White
Shambala
Show Must Go On
Easy to be Hard
Celebrate

I think that's a pretty good descending list of my favorites.

My favorite Three Dog Night song was Woman. King Solomon's Mines was a great drum piece in a time when everyone had to have at least one drum solo on at least one of their albums.

I was (am) a very big Three Dog Night fan.  I don't think they got half the respect they deserved.  No other band has ever been so successful playing other peoples' songs.  For those of you who don't know, Three Dog Night were not songwriters.  They picked the best songs by other people and interpreted them their own way.  At no time did they blatantly rip off another artist by attempting to make their versions sound identical to the original.  This is something many other performers could learn from.  Four of the original seven  members of this band are still touring under the original name.  My favorite song is Out In The Country.  I absolutely love that instrumental break!

One (which was written by Harry Nielson.  ;))
Black and White
Old Fashion Love Song
Joy to the World (of course)

I never cared to much for their version of Easy to be Hard. I think the orginal from the play Hair was deffinately the best.
