Subject: What about The Monkees?
http://sassy_elj.homestead.com/files/tinyglitter.gifI remember watching The Monkees on nick-at-nite,about four years ago, it was a thing where they aired classic tv shows and everything. The Monkees were funny and all, but they stopped airing it for some reason. Did anyone else watch them?
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
I loved The Monkees! I still listen to their music from time to time and own a collection of their episodes. :)
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
I love the Monkees. I used to watch them in the summer, one of our local channels showed reruns. My favorite is Mickey.
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
I watched them when they were first run !
For a 'created' band they weren't half bad.
And let's not forget that Mike Nesmith's mum also invented liquid paper ! (Or did you not have that add where you are ?)

I watched the original shows. My sister and I actually met all but Davey when they were really popular. They happened to be staying in the same hotel as our family. We were probably 6 and 8 years old and they played in the pool with us. It was like a dream come true for my sister and me.

Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
Everyone is always asking me which Monkees are you talking about. Hello? Micky, Davy, Mike and Peter. Do those names ring a bell? The Monkees are the best. I hve two of their albums and am getting a third. I watch everything on the tv that has to do with the Monkees. That's right! Even if I have to miss something like sleep, I will stay up and watch the Monkees. My sister and I do the Monkees walk all the time.

Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
I use to watch The Monkees all the time when it was on. For some reason I couldn't stand Mickey Dolenz. I think it had something to do with his past as The Circus Boy.(He was probably 12 years old but he looked the same as he is in the Monkees :P) Wasn't Peter Torks' real name Peter Torkelson or something similar?

OMG!!! Someone else actually remembers the Banana Splits? Here I thought I was the only one! My hubby acted like I was NUTS when I mentioned them to him! And yes, they were on right around the same time (it was either right before or right after) the Monkees here too.
As for the Monkees..I loved them! I have one or two of their record albums, one of their *shudder* 8-tracks, and now, my dear hubby got me a 4 cd boxed set of their music a couple of years ago. It's really good!
I saw them in concert back in like 1986 too...Mike wasn't there, but the other three were. It was a good show, I was pretty much "voiceless" afterwards! I had a blast!
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
I remember the Banana Splitz! :D
And I liked the Monkees a lot -- used to watch their show all the time. There was some sort of a documentary on them a few years ago and I taped the whole thing...
I particularly think Davy Jones had the cutest voice.... :o

The Monkees are the best. I don't know how anyone can hate them. I also don't know why people don't like them and their music.
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
A lot of people do like them and their music. It's just the younger generations have no connection. The Monkees are waaaay before their time. There are the few young'uns who appreciate the originality and happy-go-luckiness of The Monkees. The Monkees are just too darn wholesome anymore for these times we live in. :-/

I met Davy Jones when I was about 9. My mother worked at a theatre and he was preforming. My mother introduced me and it was the first (and only) time I was ever speechless in my life. lol Mickey was on General Hospital last week.

I used to love, love, love that show. The first record album I ever bought was one of theirs. The older neighbor girl next door was selling her collection and wanted a whole dollar for one record!! So, I begged my dad to give me a dollar. Please, please, please!! Yippee!! I got my record and played it over and over. ;D
I had the usual crush on Davey but Peter was more my speed. He was just so goofy sweet, how could you not like him??

I remember seeing it once, but I don't remember the name. I think it was a summer replacement show. They had a hilarious sketch of "Leave it to Beaver" where Barbara Billingsley unloads on Eddie Haskel, telling him what an insincere kiss he is. I tuned in in the middle and couldn't believe what I was hearing! Finally, after all these years. If only she would have slapped him....

I am 25 years old so I don't know where I'd 'fit in' as far as the age/adolescence catagory.....I may very well be one of the exceptions to the 'youngin' rule!! I will tell you that I grew up watching the re-runs of the tv show (as well as the guest spot on the Brady Bunch!) and listening to my mom's original vinyl records~~I didn't realize that they weren't as young as they appeared on the re-runs and was devistated when I found out! I was IN LOVE with Davy Jones! I can hosetly say that he was my first crush......! Anyway, I saw them (Davy & Mickey) perform last summer in the Boston area~~they were fantastic! Davy Jones is a wonderful performer, still kickin it! And Mickey Dolenze was funny and dramatic.......what a great childhood fantasy fulfilled! And after the concert we waited to see them exit the theatre and my mom's friend shook Davys hand--I was horribly jealous! There's a great website that Davy posts pictures & stuff on if anyone is interested let me know... ;)

Would you be referring to "Mike Nesmith's Elephant Parts"? I never saw that special, but I heard good things about it. By the way has anyone out there seen "Head",the feature length movie the Monkees made AFTER their tv show was cancelled? Didn't they also do a tv concert special called "33 Revolutions per Monkee" in the late 60's,and a "reunion" made for tv movie in the late 90's? And last but not least, who remembers the "New Monkees" tv show in the late 80's? It was abruptly cancelled after only a few episodes. And it is just as well, nobody can replace the original Monkees! :DThanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

I remember that every station in my area that had been hyping that they'd be showing The New Monkees cancelled it before they had aired even one episode. So, I never saw it. I hear I didn't miss much. I have met a couple of people who said the CD was actually OK, but I've never heard it and I was still seeing stacks of their CD languishing among the dust bunnies in cut out bins as late as the mid 90s.
As for not replacing them, Simon Fuller (the guy responsible for The Spice Girls, S Club 7, American Idol, et al) has been planning to do exactly that. He secured the rights to the series and an all new The Monkees series was orginally scheduled to be on the NBC fall 2003 line-up.
The first few episodes were going to be reality programming -- the casting of the series. After that, it would have switched to a scripted format modelled closely after the original series. I've heard some unsubstantiated rumors about problems trying to cast the series and/or Fuller hyping it before there was any ink to the deal, but I don't know the true status of the project, right now.
I hope it's in the dumpster... it's a bad idea. Fans of the original series aren't interested in cheap imitations. Detractors of the original group and/or series aren't interested in anything with the Monkees name on it.
Kids probably aren't going to be interested in a rehash of a 40 year old idea. They might be, at first, but imagine being a pre-teen girl, totally obsessed with "the cute one" of the new series only to hear your GRANDma say, "This is so cool, I was in love with a Monkee at your age, too!" Ouch. On the list of the ten fastest ways to kill a fad, getting a seal of coolness from Grandma is numbers 1 through 7!! :D
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
The Monkees are the best. ;D
Subject: Re: What about The Monkees?
A year or so ago, VH1 (I think) had a movie about the history of the Monkees. It was pretty interesting, and portrayed them as being cut-ups in real-life as well as on their show. They had creative differences with their producer, Don Kirshner, and fought for (and won) the right to write and play their own music.
I liked watching the reruns of their show on Nickelodeon in the 80's. I thought they had a unique kind of goofy charm to them. I also rented the movie "Head" about a year ago (I have a more detailed post about it in another board) and have come to the conclusion that the Monkees were underrated, for both their musical and comedic talents.
