Subject: Mono or Stereo?

Written By: Indy Gent on 05/19/02 at 11:48 p.m.

Do you prefer the oldies on the original mono tracking or the "digitally remastered" stereo? I bought The Beatles' "The 1's" compilation, and I played it at work. An ex-coworker claimed it wasn't even the Beatles!! Is there any difference?

J.C. when I saw the title of this thread, I thought you were going to ask everyone what their first record player was! ;D
I think I prefer oldies in Mono. I still have a lot of mono albums. Hey, remember quadrophonic sound? It was such a big deal ca. 1976 or so. I remember when our local FM station started broadcasting in quad. ;)

I think its a completely different experience.  When you listen to records, they're not perfect, but IMO that adds to the overall quality in them, it sort of gives them life and definitely history.

I don't believe there is really that much different between the '1' CD and the Beatles records, I feel closer to the music when listening to the record, but that's just me.  It's almost comparable to listening to music through headphones and listening to it just from a stereo with all the other sounds distracting you (perhaps.)

For me, records can provoke a deeper reaction, even though the music is the music, it always provokes the reaction, but the records (American Pie by McLean for instance) give it a bit more.

I have both the Mono & Stereo versions of "Rubber Soul on vinyl.  I like the stereo or "Hi-Fidelity"  Not to be confused with REO...oh, wait!  ;) My boys asked what the difference was so I turned the balance only on the left side and all you could hear was John Lennon singing, then over to the right, and all you could hear were the instruments....I remember back in the early 70's when my sister-in-law was trying to say that all 45's were mono....I showed her some of my newer ones and she was quite suprised.  So I guess I always prefered Stereo  :)

No, actually my first thought was do you prefer mononucleosis to steroids. ;)
All kidding aside, Zella, I will clarify my titles better. (BTW, my first stereo still had a multi record changer! :o)

Definitely stereo.  I have some of those old mono records but the sound's not the same.

But created stereo, 'remastered' stuff, just tends to sound lousy.  If it was originally made in stereo, that's great, but trying to remake mono never works too well.  I'm happy to listen to records in whatever they came in, and I will note that Beatles stuff was mixed quite differently for mono and stereo, and even for release in different countires (sometimes they'd actually cut out whole percussion or harmonica parts, and American records are a lot more echoey than Brit ones, I kid you not), so it's nice being able to hear all the variations, but I can't stand created stereo.

Really?  I have some music from the '40s wherein maybe half were actually "re-mastered" in stereo and others weren't.  I thought the stereos sounded GREAT!

I too love music and really couldn't care less how it was recorded or on what it is playing.  If the melody and harmony is good, I'll listen regardless of record/tape/CD, computer/turntable/carstereo, AM or FM.  I prefer the best stereo I can get, but I'm not a nut like my cousin who must waste his meager money on huge expensive sound systems.  Please!   ???

As usual, I agree with OLine.  If it's a good song I don't care what it's played on.

Audiophile friends of mine say vinyl has a "warmer" sound than remastered cd's.

As usual??  Wow, you flatter me, Steve!  LOL   :D

I like the CDs, but I still think they're overrated in every way (hoping for a better solution in the future maybe?).  The sound is good but too treble-based (kinda the way computer film graphics are a bit too "sparky" - I can spot them a mile away).  Take a good-shape record and it will sound a little more natural.  I'm also more interested in the output device than the input.  An excellent stereo w/a good tape will sound terrific.

I like old old delta blues type music.  Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Charley Patton... that kind of stuff.  Yazoo puts out a lot of it.

It's a challenge to the engineers.  They have to work off old records (sometimes they only have one or two available).  A lot of the music reproduced on compact disk is hissy, scratchy, etc.  They can only clean it up to a point and then they start losing the music.  I guess my ears aren't sensitive enough to be really bothered by it.  Listening to an old cassette tape on a cheap machine bugs me though... I hear hear hiss clear enough.

:) :D 8)I think it depends on what it was originally recorded in.A lot of the early Everly brothers songs was recorded in mono, but then they started using stereo, like on "Take a Message to mary"I like stereo if it was originally recorded in that form.If you have speaker spread out over a large room, the everlys sound pretty cool in stereo, even with the voices separating a bit.Cheers! ;) :-*

I prefer stereo. We have 4 speakers-two in the living room and two in the dinning room. It is not a quad sound-basically it is just stereo in two different places. Depending on where we are, we usually just have two speakers on. But there are times we will have all four of them on. However, for some reason, one set of the speakers goes out so we do end up listening to things in mono.  :( I think it has to do with the cats liking to play with the wires.

Stereo makes all the sounds fuller and richer...especially drums!

Stereo AND modern sound reproduction,CD's and the like. I switched over from cassettes to compact discs, and there IS a HUGE sound difference-it's cleaner and brighter. But I like the new'naked' version of the Beatles' LET IT BE than the overblown Phil Spector mix!! I also like AOL's RADIO@AOL. They play a lot of classic rock that my local classic rock station does not play, stuff like Pat Travers' BOOM BOOM(OUT GO THE LIGHTS),which I haven't heard in years!

I'm still waiting for Quadraphonic sound to make a comeback.
