Subject: Patches-Clarence Carter
I was born & raised down in Alabama,
on a farm way back up in the WOODS,
I was so ragged, the folks used to call me "Patches",
Papa used to tease me about it, 'course deep down inside he was hurt 'cause he'd done all he COULD.
You just can't top a rhyme like that, can you?

How about:
"And the mourners are all sangin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
So they put you on the street"
Steely Dan does a lot of amusing rhymes. "beg us" and "Vegas" is another example in the same song.
;D

Just realized....
I answered the above straight off of "most recent topic" and didn't see which board it was on. Ooops! Nothing in this thread has anything to do with "before the 70s." :-X

Bad Zella ! Giving poor Sammy Reed a 'Steely Dan' without first asking if that's okay ! And he a guest and all....
Back to the 60's & 70's where you (and I) belong ! :D

I understand it is an early 70's song. I put it here by accident. Sorry.

That's okay Sammy. We had fun with it anyway. It was actually out in the fall of 1970. I know, 'cus I bought the record when it came out. It is in my first record case, sandwiched inbetween "In the Summertime" and "Solitary Man."
