Tarzan Boy (New Wave in more ways than one)
Subject: Re: Once again...Classic Movies
Just remembered a genre that became better in the 60s - the Western. Before that, it was all that John Wayne crap, good cowboy vs. bad cowboy tripe, Zorro, bad Indians, etc, but Sergio Leone changed that and made the rogue, anti-hero a very popular thing. Clint Eastwood is the epitome of the wild west in those films (i.e. the man with no name saga). Pretty much the Star Wars of Westerns was that trilogy: A Fistfull Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. He was like Boba Fett, Charles Bronson, Snake Plissken, Vincent Vega, Mr. Blue, Mr. White, Mr. Blonde all rolled into one kick ass villain-hero. A great score by Ennio Morricone to boot!
Tarzan Boy
Subject: Re: Once again...Classic Movies
I'm not particularly into the older, older movies, mainly romantic movies with Marilyn Monroe and the like. I'm not saying that they aren't good, I'm saying I don't like them.
For me, I don't care what era a movie is in, I consider it a classic because of the things that make movies good. Eg. Plot, acting, character development etc. So here's my list:
Taxi Driver
The Deer Hunter
The Wizard of Oz
American Beauty
In The Bedroom
Carrie
From Dusk til Dawn
Girl, Interrupted
That's enough for now. I know some of you will disagree with my list, but by asking for classic movies, you are asking for my interpretation of classic movies, hence you get my list
Subject: Re: Once again...Classic Movies
Just saw one of my favorites again today. "To Sir With Love"-Sidney Poitier. Great song too.
Subject: Re: Once again...Classic Movies
I always liked the song in the soundtrack better than the one that came out as a single. There was a 2nd verse in the movie that they did not include in the 45. It always drove me crazy that I could not get a recording of it, until VCRs and video tapes started coming out (although I found out later that there was a soundtrack record album of that movie).
"Those awkward years have hurried by, why did they fly away?
Why is it Sir, children grow up to be people one day?
What takes the place of climbing trees and dirty knees in the world outside?
Oh Sir, what for you can I buy?
If you wanted the world, I'd surround it with a wall,
And scrawl, these words in letters 10 feet tall,
To Sir, With Love"
Now maybe I'll finish watching "To Sir With Love Part 2".
Great movie.

Jessica, I'm late coming to post on this thread but I'm so impressed.Someone else who lists "Rebecca" as a favorite movie. It did win the Oscar in 1940. And " Gone With The Wind" as well. It doesn't get any better than that. I saw other mentions of "Arsenic and Old Lace" . Does anyone remember "Topper"?
Subject: Re: Once again...Classic Movies
Three movies I never get sick of watching: (1) Cool Hand Luke, (2) The Graduate (3) American Graffiti. The by-line for American Graffiti was "Where were you in '62?" I was one year out of high school in 1962 and watched them film some of the movie in San Rafael,CA in July 1972. They closed off downtown for two weeks from midnight until 6 a.m. Perhaps the greatest attraction to that film, for me, is the music. brings back happy memories. I finally was able to see the movie in Brisbane, Q. Australia in 1973. It was fantastic.......and it still is.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry, but that is just so clueless, and thinking of the reactions to what you say on the other messageboard I frequent just makes it all the more funny.
There is no difference between a movie in colour and a black and white movie. Generally, if the cinematography is as good as it was in Citizen Kane, you can get a lot more from black and white movies.
See I could accept you saying that Citizen Kane was a great movie, because it is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Yet you had to cheapen it by saying that it was good for a black and white movie.
I'm sorry to rant, but this sort of stuff really, really annoys the hell out of me.
By the way, what did you think of The Man Who Wasn't There? It had all the resources to film in colour, yet to chose to hark back to the 40s and do a stylish black and white noir. IMO, the absence of colour enhance the movie and the scenery was almost like an extra character.

Clueless? Sorry to tick you off like that. It is just I do not watch black and white flicks that often, and I liked Citizen Kane, so I posted it was good and made a comment that it is black and white, just so nobody would be suprised if they decided to rent it. The only other black and white flick I liked was Double Indemnity. Perhaps you are a bit too high and mighty, that there is only one way to enjoy/understand a movie. And there is a difference between b&w movies and color movies, in my opinion. b&w does not add anything. I think many of these movies would have been great in color.
BTW, what other message boards are you thinking of? This is the only one I am using.

I think you meant "Woolf" not "Woof," but they both sound canine enough for me!
These are two of my favorites. My friend and I refer to "Who's Afraid of Virgia Woolf" all the time. A lot our private jokes come from classic movies. We just call it "Virginia Woolf." Ironically, neither of us have ever read Virginia Woolf.
"Mad, Mad..." was one of those movies that made me laugh until I had stomach cramps and couldn't breathe. Same thing with Peter Sellers in the "Pink Panther" movies.
FOUR GREAT PAUL NEWMAN MOVIES
Hud
Hombre
Cool Hand Luke
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

They re-released the movie a few years ago. It came to one of our local indie theaters. I wish I had gone to see it, it wasn't there long. Capitol also reissued the complete soundtrack, and an expanded version of "The Magical Mystery Tour" album. The concept was a disaster,* but the songs are wonderful!
My sister wanted my little niece to inherit the Beatles, so she bought her a copy of MMT on video, and other Beatles music and paraphenalia. It worked! :)
*The idea was to take a big bus tour, Ken Kesey & The Merry Pranksters style, and film whatever happened. When you're stoned on pot and acid, you have the Midas touch. When you're sober, the products of your inebriation may appear assanine.
