Subject: Songs that were successful in some parts in the world, but not in other parts.

Written By: King Tut on 08/12/11 at 2:56 pm

"Words" is a 1982 romantic song by F. R. David, which sold 8 million copies worldwide and peaked at #2 on the British charts in spring of 1983. It was a huge European hit, peaking at #1 in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria and Norway. It also went to #1 in South Africa in late 1982 and spent 25 weeks on the charts.

It didn't do well in North America. I don't know why. It didn't make the top 40 in USA Billboard charts. Europeans may be shocked to hear that.

Until ..."I'm Not In Love" ...this band didn't really do well in the U.S.A..  I rate them highly and bought their greatest hits CD a couple of years ago. Thye were one of those unique bands that would take huge risks. They also had all 4 members who could sing and, therefore, create different vocal sounds as well. Sooooo underated!

Jon & Vangelis - The Friends Of Mr. Cairo

"The Friends Of Mr. Cairo", peaked at #1 for 5 consecutive weeks on the Canadian singles chart in late 1981. It did not do well in America.

This failed to chart in both the us and the uk.  I love the song, but never really understood what we saw in it that other countries did not

In 1982, Mike Oldfield released a single titled 'Family Man'.  It missed the us chart, and fell just outside the uk top 40, but did reach #29 in Canada.

When Hall and Oates released a cover version that same year, the Oldfield original was still popular in Canada, so in its place, H&O chose to release 'Italian Girls' as a single in Canada, and it reached #23 in the chart.

When the 90's came, the supergroup Mike + the Mechanics fell out of the American spotlight, but continued to have top 40 hits in the UK and Canada.  Their 1991 single 'Everybody Gets A Second Chance' only hit #56 in the UK, but did reach #21 in Canada.  It was their biggest 90's hit here, and still my fave of all their hits

This one did very well in the UK, and Germany.
They seem to have a similar style to Boney M, at least to me.

They didn't fare well at all in North America.

Goombay Dance Band were also very popular in The Netherlands - for a short period of time. 'Seven Tears' hit the #4 spot, but their biggest hit was 'Sun Of Jamaica' which hit #1 in 1980.

Phyllis Nelson was an American singer. This is her UK #1 chart-topping song, "Move Closer".
It didn't do much in her native land, America.
