Subject: Do you really need to be great looking, to be talented?
Written By: JamieMcBain on 07/25/10 at 4:30 pm
While on the net, I couldn't help but noticing the hate pouring for Michael Cera, as of late.
Why?
Here is one of the examples...
"He can't act. His face makes me want to vomit."
So, the question is, can you be avarage looking and still be talanted, or do you have to be in the words of Derek Zoolander,
be "really really really ridiculously good-looking" to be talented?
???

In the acting medium...Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman were no beauties but made it to the top.
Billy Joel and Andrew Lloyd Weber made it big in music and they were not even cute! ;D
Although...today, unless you are in comedy...you appear to need to look good. There is a huge emphasis placed on the superficial... :-\\

True, there's Paul Giamatti, he's not that great looking, and neither is Steve Buscemi, both are really talanted.

You mean the textbook definition of good looking, like Drew Carey?
No, I don't think you HAVE to be. ;D
I think you need to have some sort of appeal/charm, regardless of what you look like. So many people choose movies by the cast members and not by the plot. Good example was William Peterson (Grissom) on CSI. I wouldn't call him great looking... but I stopped watching after he left the show... it just isn't right without him.

You probably don't need to be great looking but it gets your foot in the door and especially helps with social networking if the skills match the appearance.
What I do find interesting is the not so attractive people are usually stuck in comedy roles.

Fookin'
You didn't know who fookin' Shane MacGwan is? Band called the Pogues.
You ain't from fookin' Southie then ah yah!
(Sorry, it's a Boston thing)
The Pogues are from Ireland. The guys in South Boston are from Ireland via great-great-gran'pa Sneaealiayaeuhd O'Briaghan'an 160 years ago!
:D
Anyway, here is Shane and the Pgoues in Shane's more coherent days:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q99dJeA0PaI
He always had screwy teeth. That was the Pogues' trademark in the U.S. market. 1985
few years later alcoholism had totally ravaged Shane Macgowan. He pickled his body and he pan-seared his brain with the stuff. It got so he would have to take a lyrics sheet out on stage and try to read it, but he'd still just yell incoherently. So, they had to kick him out of the band.
Joe Strummer was filling in by the time I got to see the Pogues in 1991. We had a throng of rowdy drunks in Boston screaming "We want Shane! We want Shane!" Yeah, well he's in a French rehab clinic with tubes in eight parts of his body! Anyway, Joe Strummer gave us a much better show. He'd worked with band for years. Knew all the songs. If you asked me whether Joe or Shane would be dead in ten years...
