I've seen threads discussing when a celebrity is in their prime, but I want to be more intellectual and determine the peak following of various television genres.
Variety Show: Beginning of TV-1966 (though strong in syndication through the mid '70s)
Primetime Game Shows: 1955-1958 (First wave), 1999-2001 (Second Wave), 2005-2008 (Third Wave)
Made for TV movie: 1968-1993
Western: 1956-1965
Criminal Drama: 1966-1973 (First wave), 1980-1988 (Second wave), 1997+ (Current wave)
Soap Opera: 1975-1991 (This combines both the daytime and primetime peak popularity). (dying a slow death).
Family sitcom: 1961-1973 (First wave), 1982-1995 (Second wave)
Reality TV: 2000-present

You forgot a few (not going to put in the dates because I'm too lazy to do the research):
The talk show (Mike Douglas, Oprah, etc).
The hospital drama (Marcus Welby MD, St. Elsewhere, etc).
The news show (60 Minutes, 20/20, etc).
The workplace comedy (WKRP in Cincinnati, Night Court, etc).

The Private Detective was big in the 70s and 80s

The original "Law and Order" was just 'Dragnet" on a bigger budget. No problem for me. I love "Dragnet"!

Whenever sit-coms ran out of time or money, they'd pop in one of those flashback episodes in which everybody is trapped in a stopped elevator or something!

The talk show (Mike Douglas, Oprah, etc).- 1975-present In a way, the variety show sort of evolved into the talk show.
The hospital drama (Marcus Welby MD, St. Elsewhere, etc). First wave: 1969-1975, second wave 1982-1989, third wave 1994-2006
The news show (60 Minutes, 20/20, etc). 1979-2004, with a peak 1993-1999
The workplace comedy (WKRP in Cincinnati, Night Court, etc). Generally always around in some form, with the Office the most recent success.
