Subject: As Heard On Television - Music From The Ads
Written By: Henk on 03/06/10 at 6:54 am
Just something I'd like to share with you. Some tv ads/commercials that feature great music IMHO. These are all Dutch commercials, so you wouldn't know them. Feel free to post comments, or ad your own favorites.
First, a commercial for the Mitsubishi Space Star that was launched back in 1999. The track for this commercial was written specifically for that purpose and originally only lasted as long as the commercial. But because of its popularity among viewers, it was reworked into a single later that year and subsequently hit the #1 spot in Dutch charts. Every song writers dream...

Then there's this one for a Dutch insurance company. It took me some time before I realized that the music wasn't written for the commercial, but in fact a song from a 1964 episode of "The Twilight Zone". I think it fits the ad perfectly.

Last but not least, a beer ad. Brand Beer made a series of commercials in 1997, using songs like "Via Con Me" (Paulo Conte), "Feelin' Good" (Frank Cunimondo Trio) and "Wild Wood" (Paul Weller). This is another one from that series.

Those are all great contributions. :) Hearing "Relax Max" made me think of another commercial (for a Dutch insurance company) that uses the same song:
Centraal Beheer

And here's one more:

That Styx song never was a hit in Holland. Strange but true.

This next one I like very much. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to find the tune or even the correct title. Could be "Up @ Down" as well.

The recent US T-Mobile commercial for the MyTouch Fender Limited Edition features the 1983 classic 'I've Got A Rock and Roll Heart' by Eric Clapton. As he is scrolling through albums on the phone, if you look close, the main album shown is 'Money and Cigarettes' whch is the parent album of the song lol

I like all them picks so far. Music seems to have taken a much more prominent place in ads over the last two decades or so. It's a great instrument for record labels to plug new bands/artists, I think.
Two more...
Sony Bravia TV

^This song is actually a cover version of a song by Swedish electro-pop band The Knife.
Grolsch Beer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zcs3s9-bLM
Two rather ancient commercials for Grolsch beer there. The music sounds like it's classic - which was exactly what the company wanted - but it was actually composed specifically for the ads by Clous van Mechelen. It became a very popular tune in the days, and I still love it. 8)

Been lookin' for some older ones, but it's hard to find anything pre-1990.
This one's really short - only 15 seconds.
Peek & Cloppenburg / P&C

For many years, "It's Good To See You" was the slogan for P&C. It's a little known song by the Easybeats (not even a hit in their native Australia), who are best known for "Friday On My Mind".

So true. I think using good/unique music in commercials probably did start in the '90s.
