Alot of good choices.

My all time favourite is that 1975 classic 'The Homecoming' by Hagood Hardy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3-2MVonQqY

Other faves:

William Orbit - Pavane Pour Infante Defunte <Ferry Corsten Remix> (2000)
Alot of people got duped by this one.  The single version, the one that became the hit was the Ferry Corsten remix.  The version that appeared on William's album 'Pieces in A Modern Style' was a strictly classical rendition without the techno beat

I share your sentiments. Often imitated, never recreated. Good old Joe Meek...whatever was his secret? (Not so sure about the "good" though, come to think of it..)

Plenty of producers/engineers have asked this question then and now...

Amazing to think that this track (along with many others) was recorded not in a studio (as such), but above a shop!

(Not so sure about the "good" though, come to think of it..)

Certainly a troubled, tormented individual...

Not sure about my all-time fave... probably among them are "Dragon Blade" from Kozo Nakamura, Power Quest's "Distant Lands", Sonata Arctica's "Revontulet" and "Draw Me", and the piano instrumental opening theme from Final Fantasy X. Here's Dragon Blade on YouTube:

"When you're younger, you can eat what you like, drink what you like, and still climb into your 26-inch waist trousers and zip them closed. Then you reach that age... 24, 25... your muscles give up, they wave a little white flag, and without any warning at all, you're suddenly a fat bastard."
  - Arnold Rimmer, Red Dwarf, "Body Swap" (Season 3, Episode 4)

...as sampled in Carter USM's Surfin' USM, from 1991's 30 Something

Obligatory "Cool Story, Bro" Content:
I don't condone putting your foot to the floor until you're doing ~mumble~ miles per hour on public roads, even when there's no traffic for miles in either direction.  But if this track were to come up on the shuffle, I would certainly understand it.

Obligatory Sampler Content:
Yes, that's also David Bowie's "Aaw, wham, bam, thank you, ma'am!" from Suffragette City making an already surreal track even more weird.

Obligatory Misheard Lyric:
The crowd is actually chanting "You fat bastard!  You fat bastard!", not "USM!  USM!".  (I just found out tonight I'd been mishearing it for 18 years!  If you've forgotten, try googling the name of the band, the name of the track, the name of the album, and "Box Set Go".  You might like what you find.

For all of these reasons, I humbly submit Carter USM's Surfin' USM as not merely my favorite instrumental of all time, but as the best opening track on any album of all time.

I am surprised to see this one mentioned.  Usually, it's the Bill Conti original that gets the recognition.  Maynard Ferguson was from Canada and his version to this day, still somewhat gets lost in the shuffle.

I like a lot of the instrumentals here (Rockit, Axel F...) and even the old bagpipe classic 'Scotch on the Rocks' (memories of my grandad indeed) but the song that captivates me is the little known 'Garden Party' by Mezzoforte. It has such an exuberance to it.

One of the most aptly titled instrumental songs ever was 'The Happy Song' by Frank Mills from 1981.  It was an A/C hit in both Canada and the United States.  No idea why this person set the music to a video of a toy baby doll lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSLeP_lsOr8

Frank Mills' final chart appearance in the US Hot 100 was the wonderful 'Peter Piper' in 1979 which just missed the US Top 40 in early 1980.  It's always been my favourite over 'Music Box Dancer'

Yes, the baby doll thing is a little unsettling, lol.

I love both pieces, Jason and do like his famous Music Box Dancer (I think people know this song in the UK but only through adverts). Peter Piper is definitely the best - excellent.
