Subject: Parallels between the 1950s and '80s

Written By: yelimsexa on 09/01/09 at 9:39 am

A good way to connect eras is to find various connections between them. The 1950s and '80s are a good example and probably the most obvious, and I'll share some points.

-Politically conservative, Republican type politics.
-A suburban lifestyle really dominates where the city (except for the very nicest and those in newer regions like a sunbelt).
-A new form of music initiated a new generation gap (Rock and Roll vs. Tradition Pop/Jazz, Rap/Hip-Hop vs. Rock), though the new form really didn't dominate until around the middle of the following decade.
-Pastel colors were popular in the fashions, and curly hairstyles were common.
-Few wars worldwide.
-Lots of economic growth and expansion.
-Cold War fears are definately evident in both decades, with nuclear fears particularly unnerving, and potential talks about another World War.

Politically the 90s were closer to the 50s.  The Patriot Act going way beyond the wildest dreams of the House of Un-American Activities could ever dream.
