Vanessa de Mata.  Man, very beautiful.  I like :)

The only Brazilian artist(s) I know of is CSS and their single "Music is My Hot Hot Sex" which actually found a home in the Top 40 over here

Shame on you! How can you forget about Sergio Mendes, Kaoma and Deodato (to name but a few)? ::)

But to be quite honest...Not a lot of Brazilian artists make it (big) in Europe, so this is just about where my knowledge ends as well.

Wait... Aren't these lot from Brazil as well? This mellow tune even found its way to our Top 40...

Yup.

Not only are Sepultura the best thing to come out of Brazil but one of the better thrash bands around.

Sarcofago and Executer are pretty tight bands too. Max Cavalera started Soulfly, but most of the guys in it are from Arizona and California and such so..

Dang.  I didn't know Deodato were from Brazil, but how could I have forgotten Mendes and Kaoma.  I listen to Lambada ALL the time

One of my favorite composers, Jorge Antunes, is from Brazil.

Here is one of his electronic pieces from the 1960s.  There's not much of his music on YouTube, and I prefer "Valsa Sideral" to that "Amazonisches Triptychon" aria posted up there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LumjSbyFP9I

Another modern Brazilian composer I like is Jocy De Oliveira from Sao Paulo.
From "Pocket Opera," soprano: Gabriela Geluda

This is awesome: Heitor Villa-Lobos.

I love the Portuguese-language Bowie covers Seu Jorge did for the soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

As far as I know it's Eumir Deodato (Brazilian producer) - so I think this should be singular, not plural.  :-\\

Ah i was hoping someone would mention him. We always had this tendency to make every single song brazilian, most times we totaly miss but Seu Jorge nailed it. Here's his Rebel Rebel

Oh and here his him and another awesome singer Ana Carolina doing Damien Rice's The Blowers Daughter[/url

I love samba and bossa, but outside of that I am not sure what Brazillian music is specifically from Brazil.  At least recently.  Can you let me know?  I do like a few Daniela Mercury songs.

Though not Brazillian, I love Fado music from Portugal such as Mariza and Madredeus.

I love Mariza too, so cool that you know her :) My favorite fado from her is Gente da minha terra

Well if you know Daniela you probably know Axê. Specially in the north of Brazil everyone loves it 'cause you can dance to it and the lyrics are really simple.
Then we have Samba Reggae, Cidade Negra are an example.

And from the old days you can listen to Pagode, try Zeca Pagodinho and Choro, i love these guys.

But he big thing for the young people now is funk, not your traditional funk, we call it Funk Carioca and my advice is to don't even bother listen to it, is really really bad 8-P

A tune that is currently storming our charts: Cidinho e Doca - Rap Das Armas

This is just one of the many remixes. Not sure if I'm to like it or not.

I will avoid it as much as I can, but it's currently at #2 in Dutch Top 40..and climbing.

I understand it was a big hit in Portugal and France as well.

Probably nothing compared to that 'other' song (which polarizes opinion on this board just a bit!)

'Feelings' - Morris Albert

I saw Torture Squad live even before their first album, my boyfriend at the time was a big metal fan so he made me listen to it all the time. The things we do for love ;)

Wow!  :o Isabel the head banger, That's a sight I would have to see.  ;D

Most of the metal I listen to is from Henk's neck of the woods but when I found a band (Moonspell) from Portugal I searched
for other Latin metal which led me to the bands I mentioned. I am always looking for good metal, so if you know any other Brazilian
metal bands you'll let me know, right?

Isabel, I'm hurt, I would never make fun of you.  :(

I am being serious, I've been listening to a lot of metal as of late. I used to get a lot of good bands from Andy but
I haven't seen him on here in awhile. I really don't like American metal for some reason --- Evanescence is okay but
other than that ....nothing. Believe me, I will look up the bands you mentioned.

Edit to add:

I checked out Dr. Sin and Motorocker and they are pretty good. Motorocker sounds a lot like AC/DC and even do a few
of their covers.

I really like the second one - Mania de Você - the duet with Milton Nascimento.  They have a great chemistry.  The song is also really great - so sensual, and beautiful, and it's nice that it translates it for you.

Very cool.

Yeah, she and I talked about the tango and her love of dancing, way back when, in her Ask me thread (I think.)  I, too, love dancing (or at least the concept of dancing since I can't really get my Jabba the Hutt size body to moving as much as I should.)  I would have loved to have seen her dance, and even now (as was back then) every time I'd see a tango, I'd think of Isabel.  She was kinda like my own personal representation of all things lovely in Brazil.

I had some wild dream that one day, I'd come across a bunch of money and get together a bunch of my favorite people for a party, and have her there to give us a lesson or just a demonstration.  Alas, that day never came, and I'm all the more saddened that it did not.

and in that respect, I want to share with you all, one of my favorite youtube "tangos" that takes place on the Millenium Bridge in London.  This one's for you Iz.  :-*  :\'(
