I think these two were tied first:
Neneh Cherry - Raw Like Sushi
Ravel's "Bolero"/ Moussorgski's "Pictures From an Exhibition", by the Concertgebouw Orchestra (conducted by Ricardo Chailly).

I think my first CD was to replace my Neil Young 'Harvest' album which was getting scratchy.

My first wasn't actually bought until the early 90s (proves how 'with it' I was! :-[)
It was Dire Straits' 'Money For Nothing' compilation...why? Well, the general critical opinion was you could only 'appreciate' Dire Straits music on CD, so it seemed like a good place for me to start...
Still doesn't make an excuse for the terrible 'Walk Of Life', though... :P

Good topic. I made one purchase for 3 CD's in 1991:
Pearl Jam - Ten (sorry, it's 90's)
Rush - Moving Pictures (1981)
Aha - Scoundrel Days (1988) - actually a great CD! Still enjoy it

First that I bought were two cheap classical CDs - one Mozart, the other Beethoven. I still have them after 16 years.

Since posting my first two CDs above, I am trying to remember what my first classsical CD was. I think it was Brahms Symphony No.1.

Let's see.
The first cd I ever got was Michael Jackson's Bad album, but my mom bought that.
The first cd I bought was...probably Off the Wall. (I've bought them so quickly, I've kinda lost track. LOL.)
I do listen to other music outside of MJ though. ;)
