Subject: Favorite modern Christmas songs/interpretations?

Written By: xSiouXBoIx on 11/16/07 at 9:07 am

Meaning from the 70's to today. Some of my favorites are...

Last Christmas by George Michael

Merry Christmas, Darling by The Carpenters

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by The Carpenters

Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid

All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey--Doesn't it seem like this song has become a lot more popular since it was released in 1994?.

Annie Lennox's version of Walking In A Winter Wonderland--Has a cool, icy 80's sound to it. I'm not sure what year it was released in though, and I can't find anything about it online. I'm guessing it's from around '86/'87.

I also love pretty much any Christmas song sung by Vanessa Williams. She has a great voice for Holiday songs.  I also love Kenny G's "jazz" (many people argue if he really is a jazz artist) versions.

I like "Christmas At Ground Zero" by Weird Al. :P

It's Christmas at ground zero
There's music in the air
The sleigh bells are ringing and the carolers are singing
While the air raid sirens blare

It's Christmas at ground zero
The button has been pressed
The radio just let us know
That this is not a test

Everywhere the atom bombs are dropping
It's the end of all humanity
No more time for last-minute shopping
It's time to face your final destiny

It's Christmas at ground zero
There's panic in the crowd
We can dodge debris while we trim the tree
Underneath the mushroom cloud

You might hear some reindeer on your rooftop
Or Jack Frost on your windowsill
But if someone's climbing down your chimney
You better load your gun and shoot to kill

It's Christmas at ground zero
And if the radiation level's okay
I'll go out with you and see all the new
Mutations on New Year's Day

It's Christmas at ground zero
Just seconds left to go
I'll duck and cover with my Yuletide lover
Underneath the mistletoe

It's Christmas at ground zero
Now the missiles are on their way
What a crazy fluke, we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday

What a crazy fluke, we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday!

Last Christmas by George Michael

That one is actually by Wham!.  I like it too :)

The 70s: 'I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday' by Wizzard
The 80s: 'Thanks For Christmas' by The Three Wisemen (aka XTC)
The 90s: 'I Was Born in Christmas Day' by Saint Etienne

And also probably the most offensive Xmas song ever .. 'Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues / Kirsty MacColl.  How can one not love that song? 8)

I forgot about 'Christmas Rapping'! I was going to mention that one.

The first version I ever heard of that song was by the Spice girls. I had no idea it was a cover.

Who is she? Is she a forgotten singer or something?

She's a pop singer/songwriter and stage actress.

She was more popular in the 1980's as a pop princess with hits like "Only In My Dreams" & "Lost In Your Eyes". There's a thread about her at the 80's section of the forum.

So she's been forgotten for 20 years, but USED to be famous?

Are you being sarcastic since I'm tired of being poked fun at.

If not, sorry.

In a way, yes. Though she still has a fanbase and she's still active in theatre & releasing albums despite not being mainstream.

I downloaded "Shake Your Love" and a few other songs. I like Shake Your Love but the other ones sucked, no offense.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Christina Aguilera
All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

In 2001 I bought Destiny's Child's Christmas album since I was a crazed Destiny's Child lover then  ;D, 8 Days of Christmas or Winter Paradise from that could be on my list too.

Geez, and I didn't even know they did a cover of that song  ::).  That's one of those songs that should be left alone, IMO.

Yeah but I think it was actually famous before the film. I think they put it in the film because, like Dolly's I Will Always Love You, it was a signature song  (I could be wrong about this so don't quote me).

The songs I liked were

The Jackson Five - Someday at Christmas because it talks about peace... I found out years later they weren't the only ones who did this song but as a kid it was pretty powerful to me.

The Jackson Five- Give Love on Christmas Day....for obvious reasons. . .

The Jackson Five- I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.... as a kid I was shocked but as an adult I get it!  ;D

The Supremes - My Christmas Tree - cuz its about a woman who lost the love of her life whether that's her boyfriend or her kid (I think it could be interpreted either way) its kind of sad.

I like Babyface's version of Sleighride

Dolly Parton's Winter Wonderland

Chris Rea's Driving Home For Christmas

Carnie and Wendy's Hey Santa (previously of Wilson Phillips)

Mariah Carey's Hark The Herald

And this gem by Celtic Woman doing Ding Dong Merrily on High! It's like the Corrs go Christmas!  ;)
