A little off topic, but doesn't "Refugee" seem more like an '80s song anyway? Like it had that "classic rock powerhouse single" feel with arena rock production. The ending guitar solo seems very Eighties. It also had a music video.

It is amazing how many songs from 1998 and even '99 which I like (even if it was starting to take a downturn, since I didn't like nu-metal), while 2000 is really hit or miss. I guess I tend to just like some things here and there from that year. Probably just around Tenth grade is when I stopped liking the majority of songs coming out, although there's always exceptions.

I think "Breathless" by the Corrs came out in late 2000 or early 2001 and that's one of my favorites.

Don't be too hard on yourself...you're probably a 1963 or '64er, that's not old at all. Like I've said on other threads, I've always been the type to look at things in the order they happened. Like, I was old enough to have been watching lots of television in 1991 (even if it was mostly movies, the music video channels...especially VH1, or The Simpsons, lol) and back then, you and people your age were only, like 27. Which seemed pretty young to me then, especially if they were celebrities. So I've always looked at anything in the present as a natural outgrowth of that.


But...back to topic, I didn't hear "Refugee" until the late '80s I guess, when my mom bought the tape. So maybe I personally associate it with being newer than it really is, although I do think it has some presages of the early MTV sound.

From that same era, speaking of J. Geils, do you like the song "Come Back"? I just heard it on their greatest hits not too long ago, and it's also a very new wave, "Eighties" song for 1980.

'90s songs are great, there was still lots of adult contemporary and ballads. In fact, even up to 1995 I'd argue that some of it wasn't too different from Eighties music.

I have to disagree with that.

Well, I was never a huge gangsta rap or grunge fan, but I always liked the more breezy pop songs. What do you think of something like "How Do You Talk to an Angel" or "Rush Rush"? Stuff like that is more what I like from then.

I think the '90s gets stereotyped for the more hardcore music as well as the super-corny stuff (i.e. Kriss Kross, The Macarena), but the truth is there was alot of variety for what you could've been listening to. It's not as bad as people think, lol.

There is only one Paula Abdul song that I sort-of liked (at the time), and that's 'Straight Up'...a catchy little dance number that was popular at the clubs I went to back then... :)

There are two different years due to my peculiar situation.

I did make-up coursework via a program I managed to finagle with the school administration and received an actual diploma in 1989.  If I had never been held back, I would have graduated in '87.  As it was, I was held back in kindergarten because they thought I might be retarded.  It's true.  They did not diagnose childhood depression in 1975, so that was that.

Thus my grad year was pushed up to '88.

However, due to chronic truancy, despondant behavior, and discipline problems, I faced one expulsion and one transferral to an "alternative school" for delinquents.  It couldn't be more obvious I didn't belong with the vandals, the thugs, the autistics, and the dope dealers, but public schools always must clear you on paper.  So that's what they did.  I got a "diploma" not a GED, but I never "graduated" as in senior prom and cap and gown ceremony.

Thus, I call my year of "graduation" 1988.
As to "from the year," this implies songs released during the academic year, thus I include songs released as far back as summer of '87, as it takes a several weeks for a release to gain momentum.

I'm class of 95, although it's been awhile since I heard any of these songs.

Roll To Me- Del Amitri
Big Me, This Is A Call- Foo Fighters
