I have been very fortunate to have been in most state theaters (some wonderful, old buildings, some of the most ornate that you've ever seen)- from Woonsocket to Saskatoon to McAllen.  I especially love the Fox theater in Detroit.  I spent about a week working there once and it was breathtaking (image below).
I hate to say that the most beautiful theaters are not in New York City- sure the Radio City is an amazing deco design...but there are some huge venues in the central states with features such as clouds that float across the ceiling (bringing stars out once the performance begins) and the great Mighty Wurlitzer - which I saw in St. Louis and Buffalo- some of them hydraulically lifted from the orchestra floor.
I'vbe been in some impressive structures in Atlanta, Charlotte, Fargo, Seattle...You can see the roof of the Paramount in Austin here too(image not working)...

I've been there!  It's nice- I love how it's built on that slant- makes for a wacky picture from the front.    I've been to pretty much every theater in PA.  The big one in WilesBarre...what's the name of it?  it's cool too.  Lots of states have a Palace or Pantages or State or Fox theater.  PA is good about restoring and maintaining the buildings.

sometime late 80s, early 90s i guess.  i really loved arriving at oneof these places and digging around the old hallways and closets...we used to check out he basements and all- scary!

The Paramount Theatre in Rutland.

They did a remarkable job restoring it to its original splendor.  We have been there many times. We usually sit in the balcony (cheap seats  ;D ;D ) but it is kind of scary for me. The incline is VERY steep and the rows are very close together.

Carlos' son has preformed on that stage many times. (He has been the lead (guest) dancer in the Nutcracker for a local ballet company many times-even when he was dancing with national companies-if he can, he still came back to do the local production).

they just did some renovating at The Palace a few years ago. They added on a very nice addition as well.

Northampton*: The Academy of Music
(It was a music school early inthe 20th centry, was a movie theater for many decades, closed down due to bankruptcy, struggling to re-open)
Northampton: Pleasant Street Theatre (on the verge of going out of business)
Amherst*: Amherst Cinema (Abandoned for many years, they attempted to rehab it, but it was too costly, so they turned it into a cafe and some shops, and built a brand new artsy cinema behind the shops)

*Massachusetts, that is.

I just looked at images of it and i remember it so clearly!  really an amazing house.

The Orpheum Theater saw rocky horrer in it and and alice in wonderland and peter pan in it and the nutcracker in it and more also the balcony is haunted by a little girl and it burnt down once and was rebuilt and also i think more is haunted like they say you can hear footsteps late at night

The type of guy who would wear a lab coat outside of a lab is the type of guy who should be running an independent cinema!  He should have a sense of kitsch and a sense of fun.

(Unless he wears a lab coat because he's stark-raving mad, which is even better!)
