Subject: Movies that critics like/hate that we hate/like.

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 07/06/07 at 6:21 pm

OKay, so there are movies that really get a butchering from the critics circle. Yet, sometimes I defy them and watch the movie anyway.
And, believe it or not, I actually enjoy it!! Sometimes critics are dead wrong with some movies (even when they say a movie's good, and I watch it and do not agree).

So, which movies do disagree with the critics or even with a popular belief about how good or bad a movie is (such as a movie like Casablanca, often being praised for greatness, is really not a great film, in my opinion)?

Ones I liked, that lots of critics panned ...

♦ The 2003 re-make of 'Rollerball'.  Lots of critics panned it, many citing that it wasn't as good as the original, but I really enjoyed it
♦ The 2005 film 'The Dukes of Hazzard'; for the same reason above

Ones I hated, that lots of critics loved ...

♦ The English Patient; a good film for insomniacs
♦ Goodfellas; not a big fan of mob violence
♦ Casino; see above
♦ The Big Kahuna; a film about three salesmen who are sent to a hotel to land an account from a rich businessman.
The whole thing tkaes place in a hotle room suite.  Boring with a capital Z

Movies I like, that Critics have not:

- Birthday Girl (2001) - It was a shelved film starring Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin. I thought it was a lot of fun!!

Movies Critics loved but I was so-so about:

- Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King - It was good, but I did not find it as good as the first two.
- Gosford Park - This was so slow paced, I never could finish watching it.

I liked Casino a great deal more than Goodfellas (shhh, no one is suppose to know, lol). Goodfellas seemed second rate to me. It was trying too hard to be too many things.

UHF, Weird Al's 1989 starring role.

Even though it's generally a silly storyline (he pretty much does to TV and then-current headlines what he does to pop music), it also is easy to get into and care about the plight of the characters.

The irony is, in the testing, it did really well, and they figured it would be a huge hit. When it opened that Summer, it was alongside Batman, Honey I Shrunk The Kids and tons of huge hits, so of course, it got broadsided. But because of that, it later became a cult classic. Before the DVD came out in 2002, the out of print VHS was a collectors' item that people paid tons of money for (I owned a copy since the early '90s, so I was in possession of treasure without even knowing it, lol).

Critics liked/I hatedI watched Nine Lives because Ebert and Roeper liked it so much  ZZZZZZZZZZZ  I was so annoyed there was only good vingette and they cut from the scene just when it  started getting good

Most people hate the movies I like but that's because I have such special taste.  ;)

Just wondering, does anyone else like UHF or have they seen it (sorry, Al's the man so I just like promoting him I guess, lol)? ;)

Come Early Morning got good reviews and I love Ashley Judd &  Joey Lauren Adams but honestly I was bored with the film.  SherryBaby also got some good reviews. I liked it better than Come Early Morn. but I was also disturbed by it.
