excellent choices. as is close encounters.
although picking a hitchcock movie is tough. rear window would probably be the one but, you know, psycho, shadow of a doubt, 39 steps... he did so many magnificent movies.
(he also did a few that i think are a hair overrated, like vertigo and north by northwest... i mean don't get me wrong, they're great flicks, but rear window and psycho are a cut above them...)

i was pleasantly surprised by the island. i expected it to suck (it was an unauthorized remake of a movie that was mocked on mst3k, for crying out loud!) but it was really quite a fun movie.

The only thing was that it started off quite slow, but once they escaped, the action was mind blowing. That freeway scene had me on the edge of my seat 8)

I know, I love Psycho too. It was hard to decide which one I like better, so I just thought about if both were playing on T.V. at the same time which one would I watch and I went with Rear Window. Also, I love both Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. My palms get sweaty when I watch that movie. :D

This is more painful than pulling teeth...
I'll start with my ten favorites from the 1950's,i' sure i'm missing some :-\\
A Streetcar Named Desire: Brando was enough, but Vivien Leigh does a performance as Blanche DuBois that puts Scarlett O'Hara to shame.
Rebel Without A Cause: Probably the best movie about teenage angst ever.
Giant: Family, death and life in an epic movie that everyone must watch.
Cat On A Hot Tin Roof: Maggie The Cat.
All About Eve: Great script, great performance and Bette Davis eyes.
Rear Window: Hitchcock with a classy voyeur fantasy.
Vertigo: I'm afraid of heights, and i can understand obssession,so this one is close to my heart.
The African Queen: Funny and witty, and Kat Hepburn at her best.
Bellissima: One goddess named Anna Magnani and a movie that tells the truth about beauty.

there are plenty of movies better, but there's never been a movie i've felt as good seeing, as the original star wars, in the theater, in first run, in summer of 1977, when i was 8 years old. never before, and never again, will i love a movie in the theater as much as i loved that.
i'm serious, and if you were there, you know what i mean. i made my parents' life a living hell until they took me to see it in the theater TWELVE TIMES. (bear in mind, it ran in first run for something like two years, i think. movies were different then, more like broadway plays. if they were a smash, they kept going and going like the energizer bunny.)
star wars was an absolutely unique movie experience.
which makes it that much more offensive that george lucas won't give us a decent DVD. >:( that computer retouch sheesh is complete garbage. i wouldn't feed that trash to my dog.

Several good picks, tsg, but these two stand out. I haven't seen Stromboli, but I mean to (I loves me a good Rossellini movie). It's odd though, Stromboli is sometimes mentioned as one of the worst movies ever made ( ??? )
Yes I heard that before,i guess i have really bad taste 'cause i loved it ;D
Next decade goes like this...From the 60:
8 1/2 - Marcello Mastroiani,Claudia Cardinale and Anouk Aimée are superb in my favorite Fellini movie
Splendor In The Grass - Brilliant Elia Kazan film about young love and lust, and how the "wait" can drive you crazy
Blow Up - A trip to the 60's
Belle De Jour - Catherine Deneuve is divine in a story that shocks even now
Bonnie and Clyde - Faye and Warren prove that a life of crime is the sexiest thing ever
Two For The Road - Marriage ends romance? Maybe...maybe not
The Graduate - Mrs. Robinson seduces us all
Easy Rider - Born to be wild and the ultimate american road trip
Guess Who's Coming To Dinner - Spencer Tracy has a last speech that gives us the chills, and to think that 40 years later interracial couples still have to go through the bs...
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid - Newman and Redford are perfection to me.

I have a confession to make... i can't stand Kubrick's movies,please don't kill me :(
About The Passenger, but of course i love it,check out my 70's list:
The Passenger- There aren't words...it doesn't need words! Watch and let your chin drop 'cause it's why we love movies
All The President's Men - I believe every journalist out there watched this movie when they were younger and found their calling. It's a masterpiece
Taxi Driver - Scorsese and De Niro greatest team work
Pappilon- I love the book too, escape stories are an obsession of mine. It also helps that Steve McQueen was the sexiest man that ever lived
The Godfather I and II- This is IT
Lenny - Dustin Hoffman is amazing as Lenny Bruce,stand-up comedy god
Chinatown - The plot,the performances,the cinematography,Polanski, it's perfection.
Kramer Vs. Kramer - A classic with an amazing soundtrack(Henri Purcell and Vivaldi, always work imo). And i always wondered did Billy ever worked again???
Apocalypse Now - Forget horror, this was the scariest movie i ever watched,it gave me nightmares for a week, and even now after watching it more than 20 times... it still does.
Annie Hall - What can i say? La-di-da,la-di-da,la la. It's all about the lines!
Manhattan - This was the true reason why i wanted to move to New York,is that embarrassing or what? lol
The 70's were full of great films,i'm sure i'm missing a bunch i love.

My ten favorite movies from the 80's:
Diner - A really interesting look into the very strange world of male bonding.
Frances - Jessica Lange excels as Frances Farmer, and one my favorite actors of all time Sam Shepard gives one of his best performances too.
The Cotton Club - Great movie with all the classic ingredients.
The Purple Rose of Cairo - Now..."that's movie talk".
The Big Chill - Alex had some great, great friends who had a really nice taste in music.
The Fly - This movie is off the hook."Be afraid.Be very afraid".
Do The Right Thing - You either hate it or love it,and those kind of films are the ones that last.
Room With A View - Amazing british film, great performances and beautiful settings.
New York Stories - Coppola,Scorsese and Woody show their love for the city that never sleeps. The 3 stories are wonderful.
Say Anything - Of all the 80's teen comedies i like this one the most. I'm still waiting for some guy to blast "In Your Eyes" in my frontyard ::)
ET - Just because.

was goodfellas 80s? i can't remember.
vis-a-vis say anything, i'm a "the sure thing" man myself. i worship the hell out of that movie. and... where's "heathers"? absolute genius, that flick. although it hasn't dated well, school rampages not being as funny a subject as they used to be. :(
hey... did you ever see a flick called "the company of wolves"? super-high 80s weirdness, i love watching that one and just going, huh?
the big chill! meg tilly! she's the dreamiest.
i'd probably go, right off the top of my head, with
full metal jacket (sorry!)
die hard (it's not art but it's a total gas)
goodfellas (if it's 80s)
sure thing
the breakfast club
heathers
oo! the fly. i just saw that. good 'un.
star trek ii
empire strikes back
i dunno. maybe salvador?
my taste in 80s movies definitely veers toward the frivolous and goofy, now that i look back on this list. i guess maybe it was just that kinda decade. can't wait to get to the 90s so i can sound off for JFK. love that damn movie.

Are you sure Heathers is from the 80's? I really thought that was an early 90's movie ??? oh and Godfellas is from 1990,i'm sure of that.

the Red, Blue, White trilogy (counts as three?)
:) I love those too. I can't even pick the one i like the most... Blue was heartbreaking, White was funny in all its awkwardness, and Red was just amazing!
Another lovely film from that same director is La Double Vie de Véronique, with Iréne Jacob too. I love the story about how some people are so great there can't be only one of them.
