Subject: Disappointing Greatest Hits Albums

Have you ever been disappointed by a Greatest Hits album by a certain artist?  I have.  Here's a few ...

The Best of UB40 - Volume 2 (1995)

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000000WAG.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This collection includes 8 of their hits (plus 2 new songs) between 1988-1995, during a time which they had 21 hits.  It's like a mini greatest hits album

Right Down the Line: The Best of Gerry Rafferty (1989)

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00000DRAM.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It does not include "Home and Dry", "Days Gone Down" or "The Royal Mile".  In place are a bunch of songs that didn't even chart

There's been a myriad of 'GH' albums by Boney M...most (if not all) are ruined by some horrid remixing of sorts...

The only one out there (I've found) with the original recordings is 1980's "The Magic of Boney M", which was just re-released on CD a few months ago.  Seems Boney M are still popular.  It's re-release jumped into the Top 40 Album chart here :o

Come Get It - The Very Best of Aaron Carter

Though considering the source, that's bound to be disappointing.

Then and Now The Best of the Monkees.  It was just too basic.  They missed the good stuff.

Eurythmics - Greatest Hits

Missing tracks:

"Sexcrime (1984)" - which is probably one of their better songs from the 80's IMO.
"Right By Your Side" - an interesting track.

Luckily I have 12" versions of both somewhere. :D

Toto: Past to Present 1977-1990 (all their collections miss quite a few hits)

Weird Al Yankovic: Greatest Hits (I give it credit for being the first thing of his I ever bought, but even for its release in 1988, it was bare bones and no "new/extra" songs)

Paul McCartney: All the Best (good overview, but missing lots of his '80s hits. Again, no "new" songs)

Cheap Trick: Greatest Hits (pretty good overall, but missing "It's Only Love", "California Man" and a few minor hits)

Steve Winwood: Chronicles (thumbs up for the updated, hit version of "Valerie", but missing lots of good songs with quite a bit of filler)

Bruce Springsteen: Greatest Hits (missing "War")

Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House

I just noticed it does not include Chocolate Cake, which I remember was a massive hit for them

Most greatest hits are dull. Theres usually a difference between "Best Of" & "Greatest Hits". Best Ofs can contain non-commercial successful tracks where-as Greatest Hits cant.

I think Rolling Stones "Forty Licks" & Pink Floyd's "Echoes" were crap. But they are both "Album" groups, not "Hits" groups. You need the full album to appreciate bands like these.

Led Zeppelin's Remasters (NOT the 4 disc set, but the 2 disc set). It doesnt include one of my all time favorite songs of theirs, 'Over The Hills And Far Away'.

I was kinda ticked that the Cure's greatest hits didn't include "Pictures of You."  That's one of my favorite songs.

Don't get me wrong, these are great compilations (I have the latter 3 on CD), but not one of them includes 'Take A Chance With Me' :\'(

I always hated Aerosmith's first greatest hits album from 1980. It only had 10 songs on it, and almost half of them were horribly edited 8-P

Nirvana's greatest hits, Led Zeppelin's Early Days and Latter Days, Aerosmith's as Mach!ne_he@d pointed out

I'm probably forgetting some, but the only greatest hits compilation that I actually like is Queen's double disc

Lamb's Greatest Hits is missing my favorite song, "Lusty."  It is the first song off of their first album, which had the most ridiculous beat I have ever heard in a song at that point - 1997.

I think I bought an ELO greatest hits that only features some of their 70s stuff which is a bit sad. Bad Manners CDs are also notorious for missing obvious songs out like 'Lip up fatty' and 'Can Can'.
