Subject: What "bad movies" do you own?

Written By: Mushroom on 12/04/06 at 8:22 pm

Because so many of us collect movies (on video tape or DVD), I was wondering how many people other then me have real "stinkers" in our collection.

Now I am not talking about a movie that you bought sight-unseen only to discover it was bad (like the direct to DVD movies "Starship Troopers 2" or "The Butterfly Effect 2").  I am talking about movies that you bought that you knew most people consider them to be bad movies.

And they may actually be movies that you enjoy.  But anybody who looks through your collection will wonder "What in the heck is that movie doing?"  Since I have over 500 movies, I have quite a few that fall under this category.  In fact, quite a few that are listed in Tia's topic are in my collection, which inspired me to start this one.

And here are just a few that I own:

Battlefield Earth
Xanadu
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band
Heaven's Gate
Paint Your Wagon
Beverly Hills Cop III
Cool World
American Pop
North & South Book 3
Fantastic 4
Planet Of The Apes (2001 Tim Burton version)
A Knights Tale
Last Action Hero
Willard (2003 Crispin Glover version)
Titan A.E.
The Family Enforcer
Dune (1984 David Lynch version)
The Man In The Iron Mask
Poseidon
Aeon Flux
Stay Tuned
The Bride
Little Shop Of Horrors (both the 1960 and 1986 versions)
Rollerball (2002 version)
Slapstick
Invaders From Mars (1986 version)
Flashpoint

And finally, one that people always question when they see it in my collection:

The Birth Of A Nation

Battlefield Earth?  :D  That was such a terrible TERRIBLE movie.  Hehehe.

Let's see...I bought Charlie's Angels (2000) on a whim.  Silly me.

Willard (2003 Crispin Glover version)

My sister has this movie. I liked it.

The Man In The Iron Mask

The one with DiCaprio and everyone? I liked that one.

Little Shop Of Horrors (both the 1960 and 1986 versions)

The '86 version was fun.

The Birth Of A Nation

This is supposed to be fairly good, although it involves a lot of racism. Unfortunately, that is a part of history, and must be documented as such.

I own Titanic. I'm so sorry. We also have The Punisher (Thomas Jane version).

Actually, I kinda like Battlefield Earth.  I just ignore the obvious blunders that the drug addicted Elron Hubbard wrote, and view it as an escapist sci-fi movie.

I actually own Charlie's Angels as well, and did not think it was to bad.  The really horrible version was Full Throttle.  I caught the first 5 minutes of that one on cable, and turned it off.  That movie was unwatchable even by me.

I actually find most of The Birth Of A Nation enjoyable.  In reality, the storyline is almost identicle to the popular North & South books and movies.  I just tune out the racist overtones, and view it as an innovative movie of the era, that covered a horrible period in time, from a different viewpoint.  While the "atrocities" are very obviously very slanted and misrepresented, it is about the only place you will see a depictation that shows that the "Reconstructionist" era had it's share of misdeeds from "well meaning" Northerners.

Oh, I forgot the Punisher movies.  I own the 2004 version, and owned the earlier 1989 Dolph Lundgren version (my VCR ate the tape about 5 years ago).

The Punisher movie with Tom Jane isn't bad at all, it was just restricted by its comparably miniscule budget.

We also have "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood" :D

Oh yeah, and "Gone With the Wind."

which version of Swept Away do you have? the original 1975 Italian version because that film kicks ass. It's good, or do you have the cheesy remake with Madonna

I am looking through Tia's list, and am amazed at how many of those movies I actually own.  Here are some of those that I forgot to list earlier:

Armageddon
Freddie Vs. Jason
Godzilla (1998)
Highlander 2
Lost In Space
Mars Attacks!
The Postman
Waterworld
Red Dawn

And a lot of those I would actually buy, if I could ever find them on DVD.  Among those are:

Burn Hollywood Burn - An Alan Smithee Film
Far Out Man
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Howard The Duck
The "Police Academy" Series
Popeye
Porky's (the original movie had some surprisingly good commentary in anti-semitism in American society)

I bought Ice Pirates cause it looked like a great adventure movie from the box art.  Great isn't exactly the right word for this movie :D

I actually liked Ice Pirates, and owned it on VHS.  I would get it on DVD in a heartbeat if I saw it ("Space Herpes!").

I also own Idle Hands, but forgot to list it.  I really like it myself.  I was also dissapointed with Aeon Flux, but had to get it to complete my collection if nothing else (I own the boxed set of the original cartoons - well worth getting if you can find it).

watch the original one if you haven't already. while i don't approve of violence towards women, it's worth a viewing just to see Giancarlo slap that rich b*tch  ;D  when they get stranded on the island.

The "Police Academy" Series

I got the complete Police Academy DVD box set (all 7 films) at Wal-Mart for $36.99.  Best deal I ever got!  I also got Ice Pirates from Wal-Mart for $11.99

You gotta admit though, that one scene where they go through that warp and age really fast was kind of goofy ;D

i love battlefield earth. i just added it to my netflix queue the other day.

i have too many bad movies i bought knowing they're bad to list here. some real gems:

devil dog: the hound of hell.
starship invasions.
the crawling eye
beyond witch mountain (the little known, and little seen, and absolutely dreadful, THIRD witch mountain movie. even i have a problem getting through it)
roger corman flicks, like death race 2000 and the trip
the incredibly strange creatures who stopped living and became mixed-up zombies

the list goes on and on.

I have Death Race as well.  I bought it a few months ago.

I also have "Independence Day", but I thought it did not belong on that list, so did not include it.  I doubt if very many people would agree that it is one of the "worst movies", since it was one of the biggest movies of the year when it was released (and continues to live on, in books, DVD release (it is on it's 3rd release).

Of course, I also have a bunch of classic Vincent Price movies, which some people think are horrible.  They include "The House On Haunted Hill", "The Last Man On Earth", "The Abomidable Doctor Phibes" and "Doctor Phibes Returns".

Now if I can only find a copy of "The Velvet Vampire".  8)

I really loved Dune.  I own all 3 versions on DVD, and watched the David Lynch version again just last week.  My only problem was his idea of turning "The Weirding Way" into some kind of sonic gun.  Other then that, I had no major problems with it.

Dungeon Master, now that is a movie I saw in the theater that I wish I could forget.  You know the movie is gonna be bad when you keep seeing the boom mike moving across the top of the screen.  But one good thing about the movie, it was where Richard shaved his head, giving us the "Bull" that we all know and love.

Long live the fighters!

May Shai-Halud spit all non-believers out of his holy intestines!

LOL!  I am currently playing Guild Wars: Nightfall, and one of the things you have to do is ride giant sand worms.  Whenever I go out with other people I am constantly making Fremen and Shai-Halud remarks.  You can tell those that have seen the movies or read the books, cause they laugh.  The others just go "Huh?"

I have all of Frank Herbert's "Dune" series.
I'm hoping to get Brian's "Pre-Dune" series.

Brian's books are OK, but it is obvious he is not his father.  I am currently reading "The Battle Of Corrin", which is the 12th book in the series.  After I finish it, I am going to start on The Road To Dune, and Hunters Of Dune.  Hunters is the true sequal, and picks up where Chapterhouse: Dune left off.

Poison Ivy
Road Trip
Ghosts Of The Abyss
Ghost Ship
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp's version)
Taboo
Tale Of Sweeney Todd
Thunderheart (Val Kilmer investigates a murder on an Indian Reservation)
28 days (Sandra Bullock in Rehab)
28 days Later (no relation to 28 days.. this one is post apocalyptic horror)

Another great one is "Freeway" with Reese Witherspoon.. She plays this poor white trash ragamuffin. Her mother's a  crack whore, her mothers's boyfriend 'does sex to her' and she has a black boyfriend named Chopper. She tries to escape this life to go live with her grandmother in the trailer court. She has car trouble and is picked up by Kiefer Sutherland who plays this serial killer.  This movie sounds dim and dark.. but if's fricken hilarious. In a dark humor sorta way. This is one of my all time favorite movies.. but most people don't get it.. One thing about Reese's performance, she's never played a character like that before or since. And she did it so well.

Oh my god.. Best in Show??? that movie is frickin hilarious.   A Mighty Wind.. I had to watch a couple times.. but This is Spinal Tap... now that's humor du jour.

A couple other ones  that are a bit older.. that are along the same 'mockumentary' lines are
"The History Of White People in America" and "Portrait Of A White Marriage".

I've got around 25 movies on VHS and none on DVD since I just rent from Netflix now. Out of those 25 movies I do have the only really odd one in the bunch would be

1972's "Super Fly". I think I got it real cheap back in '97, and the only reason I bought it was because

a) I like its music.
b) I just had to know why Freddie was dead.  ???

(It's really not a bad movie if you take out a couple of minutes overall where it looks and acts like a drive-in flic, that's all)

Yeah, it was. Sometimes I look at the movies I bought over the years and say to myself, "What in the world was I thinking?  :P " But I think I know why. I lived up on a mountain and only had 1/2 a channel on t.v. (I could hear it and some days I could actually see it). So I bought a lot of movies-and the store I bought them from (Ames) didn't have a wide selection. Then I moved to civilization and had cable t.v. so I didn't buy as many movies (I started recording them  ;D ;D ).

Cool! Somebody else actually remembers this movie.  :)  But you should know it cause it has Kim Richards in it. :)
I haven't seen it in years and when I found it and bought it, I got upset right away at the beginning. SPOILER: In the beginning when they find the family dog killed in front of their house, it was either a bassett or a beagle. Hard to tell from the backside shot of it. I am a beagle lover and that broke my heart. :(

Cheezy movie esp. when they show what the devil dog actually looks like, but an enjoyable movie nevertheless.

AND ike eisenmann! only time they ever appeared together outside the wm movies. well, and that cheesy blair witch mountain project thing in the late 90s.

there's lots of great stuff for dog lovers -- the devil dog is REALLY cute. which is part of the reason why the movie almost totally doesn't work. you're supposed to take him as all ferocious but he's there yapping and panting and just generally being too cute for words and it's just... not scary.

Because so many of us collect movies (on video tape or DVD), I was wondering how many people other then me have real "stinkers" in our collection.

Now I am not talking about a movie that you bought sight-unseen only to discover it was bad (like the direct to DVD movies "Starship Troopers 2" or "The Butterfly Effect 2").  I am talking about movies that you bought that you knew most people consider them to be bad movies.

And they may actually be movies that you enjoy.  But anybody who looks through your collection will wonder "What in the heck is that movie doing?"  Since I have over 500 movies, I have quite a few that fall under this category.  In fact, quite a few that are listed in Tia's topic are in my collection, which inspired me to start this one.

And here are just a few that I own:

Battlefield Earth
Xanadu
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band
Heaven's Gate
Paint Your Wagon
Beverly Hills Cop III
Cool World
American Pop
North & South Book 3
Fantastic 4
Planet Of The Apes (2001 Tim Burton version)
A Knights Tale
Last Action Hero
Willard (2003 Crispin Glover version)
Titan A.E.
The Family Enforcer
Dune (1984 David Lynch version)
The Man In The Iron Mask
Poseidon
Aeon Flux
Stay Tuned
The Bride
Little Shop Of Horrors (both the 1960 and 1986 versions)
Rollerball (2002 version)
Slapstick
Invaders From Mars (1986 version)
Flashpoint

And finally, one that people always question when they see it in my collection:

The Birth Of A Nation

I like alot of movies like that, particularly B-type '80s stuff. Would Weird Al's UHF count (it's a cult classic now, but apparently bombed at the box office)?

I'll post more later.
