Subject: Movie Musicals

Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 08/14/06 at 1:38 pm

Are any of you familiar with the Disney movie/musical, "Newsies?"  I remember watching this when I was younger, and I fell in love with the songs and the story. I ended up buying the movie and the soundtrack because I loved it so much.  It was one of those musical movies that I totally fell in love with.

What are some other musical movies (that were never on the stage)...that you totally love?

Scrooge (with Albert Finney)
Singing in the Rain
Meet Me in St. Louis
Wizard of Oz

I'm sure there are more.

I saw Newsies along time ago, and I loved it 8)

My favourite has to be Popeye starring Robin Williams.

Another great one was "Absolute Beginners" starring Patsy Kensit, and also featured small roles from Sade and David Bowie

other good ones that I am not sure qualify as a movie musical:

Rock and Roll High School
La Bamba
True Stories

Popeye- Loved it!
Newsies- Never seen it, but heard of it
Scrooge- Loved it!
Singing In the Rain- OK (Prefer 'Xanadu')
Brigadoon- Quite good

Here's a surprising entry: Jailhouse Rock.

I have to give this one credit. I'm no Elvis Fan, but it was passable!

The Sound of Music will always be a favorite of mine.

And, yes, I liked Newsies.  And it's too early in the morning to think of others right now.

The Sound of Music has been on stage many a time and is due to open soon in London.

Please include "New York New York" from 1977 as a movie musical that has been so far only a movie.

Ok, I have to say it: Grease 2. Yeah, yeah, I know it is a stupid movie but I can't help but like it. Also many of the Disney movies: Beauty and the Beast (BEFORE it became a play), Aladdan, The Little Mermaid, etc.

"Grease 2" was another surpriser.

There were many stars who claimed they never sang before certain OTHER movies, but this proves them to be liars.

Michelle Pfeiffer, for example, claimed she never sang before "The Fabulous Baker Boys".
Then why does this show her singing? Was there a voiceover artist?

And how about Adrien Zmed, as Johnny Noggarelli?
And I noticed 4 returning actors from the original:

Eve Arden/ The Principal
The actress who played "Blanche, the School Secretary"
The actor portraying Balmudo, leader of the Scorpions
Didi Conn/ Frenchy

So, it couldn't be ALL bad!

I always heard that someone else did the singing but according to IMDB, Michelle Pfeiffer DID sing.

Brigadoon, and Singing in the rain are my favourite Gene Kelly musicals. I love the old MGM musicals. 'In the good old summer time' springs to mind too.
Also Grease, Rocky horror show, Little shop of horrors and now my mind has gone blank...........I'll have to come back to this.

I think I noticed the Eugene character was in Grease 2 also.  ;D And yes I begrudgingly admit I dig the movie mostly for Maxwell Caulfield but the songs are catchy too if you don't compare it in your mind to the original.

Catchy songs in "Grease 2"-

"Prowlin' (The T-Birds Theme)"
"Charade" (Maxwell Caulfield's lament over Stephanie Zunonni)
"Who's That Guy?" (I think almost the whole cast got in on it)
"Reproduction" (That scene was absolutely HILARIOUS!!!)

Worst Song In "Grease 2"-

Cool Rider- even if Michelle Pfeiffer sang it, it STILL sucks!

That one was OK...but I think "Reproduction" is probably the funniest song in there.
The way Tab Hunter starts it off....

That's OK, Cat. Disagree all ya want.
When it comes to the world of theatre- cinema or live- no two players will agree on the exact same performance.

This is one of those boards where I like seeing diverse agruments about who/what/where is good, as opposed to who/what/where is not.

At the local Best Buy here, they had Grease2 on DVD for only $4.99.  By the time I'd noticed it, they were sold out  :\'(

I imagine on eBay, someone will sell it for $.50

I was watching a real good movie from 1988 on Bravo! called 'The In Crowd' (nothing to do with the crappy 2000s teen horror flick of the same name).

It's a 60s era film that stars Joe Pantoliano as a rock and roll singer who is the host of a popular teen dance show.  It had classic songs from the era, and featured great musical sequences ... you know the ones where people just breakout in song in a street or in a school, and of course the typical fight scene where the bullies put on a dance number where they snap their fingers and shuffle their feet LOL.

If you liked Grease, GreaseĀ² and Hairspray (both versions), then this one won't disappoint you :)  Sadly, it's not on DVD (yet) :(

I recently saw this film in Spanish (I was looking to fall asleep), and it was all about this guy who's in love with this gal, but she doesn't really know he's alive. Meanwhile, another gal is in love with him, and she was introduced by the guy's best friend.

For the life of me, I can't recall what it was called, but it consisted almost entirely of musical numbers.

I love Grease 2 just because it's unintentionally funny, especially when Michelle sings 'Cool Rider'. I also love how much Michelle looks like a Debbie Harry impersonator. She looks like she was dressed up as her during the CBGB's days....

I also love the Rogers & Hammerstein musical State Fair, from 1945 that most people don't seem to appreciate as much as I do.
