Notes:
1. A terse, synthless version to rival the original.
2. A dumb song by an ‘80s Austrian band called Opus (original title “Live is Life”), Laibach turned it into a neo-nazi anthem,  a howl to listen to!
3. Lamb is a forgotten English songbird with some Annie Lennox appeal.  Her 1983 version of R.O.T.S. featured lots of cheesy electric organ and synth drums.  Doors fans would hate it, but I thought it was cool.
4. Made famous on the “Less Than Zero” movie soundtrack.  I’m not much of a Bangles fan, but they were the perfect band to cover H.S.O.W.
5. Sort of a joke version with done in a gravelly voice with crude beatboxes.  Somehow it retained a raw emotional appeal.
6. Richard Butler’s voice was just great for this song!  Bobby Darin probably had the biggest hit with it around 1956.
7. If you like S.T.H lyrics, but not that draggy music, Tiny Tim & Brave Combo give you jazzed-up lounge version complete with Tiny’s vocal acrobatics.  Seek the TT & BC album “Girl” (featuring a cover of a great cover of the Beatles’ song “Girl” as well) on Rounder Records.
8. Originally “Waiting for my Man” was done by the Velvet Underground.  OMD did a remake of it with slappy, poppy synthes, an accidental parody the OMD themselves didn’t like!  Sometimes dorky to the nth degree runs right back into cool!  OMD’s version was released in the winter of 1980 as the original b-side to “Messages.”  It then disappeared until its inclusion on “Navigation: The OMD B-Sides” in 2001.

I liked Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, it was powerful, and sounded like it could have easily been written by Cash.
