Subject: Cover songs you enjoy
Written By: MaxwellSmart on 09/20/05 at 9:32 pm
So we've had the cover songs you can't stand thread, how about cover songs you like?
Here are some of mine, in no particular order:
Johnny Cash: One (original artist: U2)
Love Spit Love: How Soon Is Now (o.a: The Smiths)
Johnny Cash: Personal Jesus (o.a: Depeche Mode)
Sunshine Blind: Space Age Love Song (o.a. A Flock of Seagulls) 1
Johnny Cash: Hurt (o.a: Nine Inch Nails)
Laibach: Life is Life (o.a: Opus) 2
Annabelle Lamb: Riders on the Storm (o.a.: The Doors) 3
The Bangles: Hazy Shade of Winter (o.a: Simon & Garfunkel) 4
This Mortal Coil: Alone (o.a: Colin Newman)
This Mortal Coil: Drugs (o.a: Talking Heads)
BiGod 20: Like A Prayer (o.a: Madonna) 5
Siouxsie & The Banshees: Dear Prudence (o.a: The Beatles)
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic: Sombre Reptiles (o.a: Brian Eno)
The Psychedelic Furs: Mack the Knife (o.a: Weill/Brecht) 6
Tiny Tim & Brave Combo: Stairway to Heaven (o.a: Led Zeppelin) 7
Aztec Camera: Jump (o.a: Van Halen)
Coil: Who By Fire (o.a: Leonard Cohen)
Cabaret Voltaire: Here She Comes Now (o.a: Lou Reed)
OMD: Waiting for the Man (o.a.: Lou Reed/VU) 8
Notes:
1. A terse, synthless version to rival the original.
2. A dumb song by an ‘80s Austrian band called Opus (original title “Live is Lifeâ€Â), Laibach turned it into a neo-nazi anthem, a howl to listen to!
3. Lamb is a forgotten English songbird with some Annie Lennox appeal. Her 1983 version of R.O.T.S. featured lots of cheesy electric organ and synth drums. Doors fans would hate it, but I thought it was cool.
4. Made famous on the “Less Than Zero†movie soundtrack. I’m not much of a Bangles fan, but they were the perfect band to cover H.S.O.W.
5. Sort of a joke version with done in a gravelly voice with crude beatboxes. Somehow it retained a raw emotional appeal.
6. Richard Butler’s voice was just great for this song! Bobby Darin probably had the biggest hit with it around 1956.
7. If you like S.T.H lyrics, but not that draggy music, Tiny Tim & Brave Combo give you jazzed-up lounge version complete with Tiny’s vocal acrobatics. Seek the TT & BC album “Girl†(featuring a cover of a great cover of the Beatles’ song “Girl†as well) on Rounder Records.
8. Originally “Waiting for my Man†was done by the Velvet Underground. OMD did a remake of it with slappy, poppy synthes, an accidental parody the OMD themselves didn’t like! Sometimes dorky to the nth degree runs right back into cool! OMD’s version was released in the winter of 1980 as the original b-side to “Messages.â€Â It then disappeared until its inclusion on “Navigation: The OMD B-Sides†in 2001.

I liked Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, it was powerful, and sounded like it could have easily been written by Cash.

Also "Without You" written and performed by Badfinger, which the writers, the late Pete Ham & Tom Evans, gave to the late Harry Nilsson who had a huge hit in 1972 with the song. Of course it was later destroyed by Mariah Carey :o :P

That last Johnny Cash album with all the covers on it was amazing. So very amazing. I don't even like U2's version of "One" but Cash makes it painfully wonderful. Max, you actually had a lot of my favs on your list. Some others would be...
"Rock and Roll All Night" - Poison (orig. Kiss) feat. on the Less than Zero soundtrack along with the Bangles' "Hazy Shade of Winter" which you mentioned.
"B!tches ain't sh!t" - Ben Folds (orig. Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg)
"Tomorrow Never Knows" - Our Lady Peace (org. Beatles)
"With a Little Help from My Friends" Joe Cocker (org. Bealtes), used as Wonder Years Theme
"People Are Strange" - Echo and the Bunnymen (orig. The Doors)
"All You Need is Love" - Echo and the Bunnymen (orig. Beatles) rare track
"Wimoweh" - Pete Seger and the Weavers (orig. African Folk Song) later lyrics were added and it was remade into "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
"Melt With You" - Saves the Day (orig. Modern English) rare track
"All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix (orig. Bob Dylan)
"Like a Rolling Stone" - Jimi Hendrix (orig. Bob Dylan)
"Chelsea Morning" - Fairport Convention (orig. Joni Mitchell, whose version is way better)
"Uncle Rat" - Danú (orig. Irish Folk Song)
"An Deirc" - Danú (orig. Irish Folk Song)
"The Hills of Connemara" - Gaelic Storm (orig. Irish Folk Song)
"The Rocky Road to Dublin" - The Dubliners (orig. Irish Folk Song)
"Cornrigs and Barleyrigs" - Paul Giovanni (orig. poem by Robert Burns) made for The Wicker Man Soundtrack
"Working Class Hero" - John Lennon (orig. Bob Dylan)
"If Not for You" - George Harrison (written by Bob Dylan)
"On Top of the World" - The Sugarcubes (orig. The Carpenters)
"F*ck tha Police" - Rage Against the Machine (orig. NWA) rare live track
"F*ck tha Police" - Bone Thugs and Harmony (orig. NWA)
That's all I have time to think of right now. After this, I'll make a list of covers I hate.

I didn't know The Bangles did a version of Cruel Summer?
I remember the Bananarama one from 1984 and the remix of it they did in 1989, plus the Ace of Base version in the late 90's :)

Atomic Kitten featuring Kool and the Gang - Ladies Night

I'm also a fan of "Boys of Summer" by the Ataris and "Oops, I Did It Again" & "I Ran" by Bowling for Soup.
Not to be rude or anything, but I'm not. :-my list:
"Am I The Same Girl" by Swing Out Sister, originally performed in the late 60s by Barbara Acklin; that version I don't know...however, I do know that it contains the instrumental classic "Soulful Strut" in the background.

Heaven was OK, but the one thing that I didn't like about it was that it became a big hit on Billboard. The best dance songs are the ones that don't break into the U.S. or Canadian charts.

Yes, as is the case with many modern spins on classic records. One I certainly didn't enjoy one bit was that awful Eric Prydz 'Call On Me' song, the one which took the sample from 'Valerie', and basically repeated it over a heavy dance beat for 3 minutes. Since when was this classed as music?!

I think their version is better than the original
I heard that Jagger and Bowie originally wanted to sing this at the Live Aid concert with one of them in London and one in Philadelphia. However the time delays in the satellite transmission made it impossible. That's when they decided to do the video and release the single.

Pretty Woman ~ Van Halen
This is my #1 cover of ALL TIME. I was a Sophomore in High School. Driving School, learner's permit, Pretty Woman and Panama = 1st Speeding Ticket!!
I love to hear this best when Intruder leads into it like it's supposed to. That's my favorite Eddie solo ever and both are awesome, but even more so when they're played the way they were meant to be heard!
Everlasting Love ~ U2
I fell in love with this cover the 1st time I heard it, in the movie Forces of Nature. I searched forever to get that song! I had to order the soundtrack to the movie off ebay because it was never in any stores! It's forever in my ipod!!

I still like The Dream Academy's version of 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want' (originally by The Smiths)
For the Smiths, it was an album track. For The Dream Academy, it was a minor hit and can be heard during the museum scene in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

I found the club version on a compilation entitled Advanced Electronics Vol. 5, and it turned me on to the band. Freakily awesome stuff.

Mambo Kurt
Samba/mambo covers of pop tracks - some new wave, but mostly rock/metal. Everything from AC/DC's Thunderstruck ("Sambastruck!") to RATM's Killing in the Name Of. The cover of Hell's Bells is genius. Beg, borrow, steal, pay for it, if you enjoy the MP3s on his site, you must get your hands on a copy of Organized Crime.
I haven't laughed this hard in ages. It's like Hayseed Dixie, but from the NetherlandsGermany, and with a keyboard instead of a banjo. Genius. Warped, demented, but genius.

I don't think a single artist has relied on more covers for success than Whitney Houston. The only thing that made her records stood out is not just the voice but also the vocal arrangements. Having an artist with success with both current sounding and older hits (particularly when the artist and the fans are young) can help fans discover older and different artists/genres of music. But I will only show the original songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jc5RXbddmo- Saving All My Love For You (1978)- Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fADr-rIIC78- The Greatest Love Of All (1976)- George Benson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY0smYRdAxk- I'm Every Woman (1978)- Chaka Khan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuZO1iT4kD0- I Will Always Love You (1974)- Dolly Parton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwCNQwn_y5s- Step By Step (1992)- Annie Lennox
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le8xJlhZAGA- I Believe In You And Me (1982)- The Four Tops (Excerpt in a medley)
All The Man I Need by Sister Sledge in 1982 and For The Love Of You by the Isley Brothers in 1975 also contributed to Whitney's success, the former a #1 pop hit and the later a Grammy nominee. And of course the Star Spangeled Banner is a traditional standard which later became a top 10 hit. She had a total of 4 #1 hits that were covers, the most for any artist.

Two 'ho-hum' Macca songs that I don't much care for in their original form...
"You won't see me" Anne Murray
Reasonable try, but still a 'ho-hum' song...
Zoot's, Eleanor Rigby
Now that's more like it!
Mentioned them before, but Stevie Wonder's 'We Can Work It Out' bettered the original, as did Wilson Pickett's take on 'Hey Jude'...

'Runner' by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, a version I much prefer over the original:
It has been said that Manfred Mann wrote the song for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. It was released to coincide with the Olympics sure, but it was actually written and originally performed by Ian Thomas in 1981. Ian's version did not chart in Canada. Manfred Mann's version was an International hit

After 'International hit', add 'excluding Britain', where it didn't get a sniff...

I have a cover of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" by The Pretenders, it's on the soundtrack for the movie "Indecent Proposal". I had forgotten how much I like that one! I put it on my touch and haven't really listened to it lately. It has a lot of really good songs on it, but that one and Roy Orbison's "A Love So Beautiful" are my favorites on it.
